Oh wow, you guys are awesome! I did not expect many replies yet. Thanks for the positive feedback.

@ AstroBoy03 : Thanks! And...yeah, that's what I thought too. :P ;)

@ Novacain : Thanks! And, yeah, rumor has it this "Astroboy" character even has an English speaking forum or two online. Or so I'm told. :P

Yeah, my username is directly based from my real name. What you say is 'creative' could easily be seen as 'lazy', so thanks again, heheh. xD

@ Gotta Love ASTRO BOY: Thanks a bunch! :D

@ SpaceCookie : Thanks. Prisma colors are awesome! If cost is an issue, it doesn't have to be. The 3D software I use is powerful and 100% free...forever. :)

@ AprilSeven : Thanks for the kind words. Tsk tsk tsk, Hubby. There must be some way you could motivate him? Maybe you can strike a match under his bum? ;) Lightwave is a great application! So is Blender, and it's what I used to make this model. :)

And, I *knew* Astro Forever was a her...she was too nice to be a guy. :P

@ Ghost : It's cool you have Blender. I hope you figure out how to use it too, so you can post something. Thank you for your interest, and you bet i'll definitely be posting updates on this project.

@ Diehard67 : Like Justin Bieber says...I will never say never, lols. But for now I can say it's not likely *this* model will be available for download because I may put it on my professional demo reel. I just saw a site selling models that I know for a fact were being given away for free. The thought of someone selling my freebies is just as discouraging as the thought of someone giving away my commercial products...

@ Astro Forever: Thanks!! I'm glad to hear that! Well besides your helpful PM replies, you provided the model sheets which I used as a reference to build the 3D model. That saved me a *considerable* amount of time. I actually found this site because of a google search I did recently for "Astroboy Model Sheets." It led me to those cool model sheets which you linked...almost 4 years ago. It naturally also led me to join this forum, and I'm really glad I did. xD

@ Mizrael : Thanks for your interest in this project. Please see my previous reply to Diehard67. Also, if you are interested in having a 3D model of Astroboy, maybe you can modify a free model from Daz3D or Miku Miku Dance? The thought of *this* model, or any model of Astroboy being turned into a simple ragdoll for Gary's Mod, or a tasteless Youtube meme...just isn't desirable for me. I hope you can understand and appreciate my position.

Also, thanks Anime Girl 16 for telling me how to add links to my sig, and about the Uran wallpaper on your youtube page. In fact, since I've joined, everyone here in general's been great, and I really appreciate it. xD

Anyway, no big updates just yet cause I was busy yesterday, but I'm going to try to post some today if time allows. If anything slows me down, it's doing 'research' by watching episodes to get the reference images I need of the cannon, rocketboots, and finger lasers. So first I've gotta try to hunt down the episodes in order, then watch them, then get screencaps, then photoshop 'em, then model them. So, try to bear with me... ;D Normally I'd do a simple google images search and go from there, but the problem with that is that Astro has been around for so long that I'm bound to mix the character designs together on accident, which will take away from the specific likeness of this individual model. I hope that makes sense, lol.

Wish I could embed videos here in the forums instead of just linking them...That'd be cool.

...

  • made cheeks more round
  • added lines to ears, and bottom of lip
  • added shines to eyes, belt and shorts
  • altered skin and eye shader colors
  • added and adjusted the cell shading (sans outline)
  • general file housekeeping and maintainence

model is still symmetrical so next I should add eyelids and an inner mouth.

Unhurdof, the arm cannon was in the 2003 series, but not in the 1980 series, if you didn't know.

If you are done working on Astro's head, this will not affect you, but if you were to work on it from screenshots, it wouldn't be easy since we can clearly distinguish between at least three different drawing styles in the 1980 series.

Perhaps this could help a little then:

The feet turning into rockets weren't as detailed in the 1980 series as they were in the 2003 series.

I did *not* know that, I'm glad you mentioned it.

Ok, so now we're getting somewhere...that piece of info is *priceless.* I've been wondering why some images of him his head to body proportions appear to be different, or his arm seams are drawn sometimes, and sometimes not, or his feet appear to be fairly different. I've definitely got to identify those before I move on too much further.

Thanks for posting that image too!

Heya GLAB,

Thanks for your interest. Your comment is probably the nicest compliment anyone could give. :) I'd sure like to see any 3D models you make. That'd be great! Do you know what software your school might use? In the meantime, maybe you could practice with Blender?

As for where I'm at after reading Astro Forever's last reply, the thing of it is...I'm quite eager to progress forward. But if I do prematurely, I will lose work or have to redo it. The modeling must be finalized before I can move forward to any other stages in the 3D character creation process such as texturing, rigging, or animating. The moral of the story I've gotta be patient because I want to do Astro justice. :)

Edit:
@ Androids101. Yeah Astro.. something or other. :P Thanks for your comment. :)

I don't think my school even has a class like that, but my dad said he would let me go to a summer class. I will try blender. Thanks Unhurdof

Perhaps this thread could help: All 1980s Astro screenshots. I believe we have screenshots from every episode (the episodes aren't listed in order though).

As for the drawing styles, I have given an example in this post - I believe it's the only episode in which Astro is drawn differently within the same episode. We had talked a little bit of it in this thread from post #49 too.

@ Glab: You're welcome. If you do try it, be sure to let me know so I can help you if possible. In addition to any help or advice I might be able to give you, i know of a TON of free video tutorials on different subjects. :)

@ Astro Forever: You're my new personal hero. Thank you. :)

I'm really surprised Astroboy didn't have arm cannons in the 80's show. I wonder if he did in the manga?
