"Astro Forever" wrote:I watched the Crystal Castle episode yesterday evening and the style is very close to the style in Save the Carolina 3, although there might be a slight difference. I'm not even sure if there's one but the Crystal style matches the one in the Birth of Astroboy perfectly, while I seem to notice a very, very, very small difference with episodes such as Save the Carolina 3 or The Greatest Robot in the World. It's like Astro's eyes are bigger in comparison to his lower face, but it could very well be the same artist who changed his style a little... or it could be me imaging things. :whistling:

Yeah, even within a particular style there are slight differences shining through. The picture Adrian_68 posted looks similar to the style used in 'The Robots Nobody Wanted' where Astro's hairpiece appears to be a little smaller compared to his face. Also the distance between his eyes seems bigger than usual.
:) You're indeed right by pointing out the styles' similarities shown in 'The Birth Of Astroboy'/'The Crystal Of The Desert', it hasn't occured to me before.

I haven't seen the picture of the Photoshop game in the Crystal episode, but I was half asleep so I don't think it means anything.

I'm in comparison mood:

Comes pretty close to it, aye? :D

Anyway, sorry for hijacking the topic. I'll see if I can find some pics for the running caption. ;)

I have seen behind the scenes footage on the 1963 Japanese-language set. At that time, they used foreground images on different backgrounds. I could dig up frames from various episodes in which the foreground characters are exactly the same while the backgrounds are different. They used other techniques to economize their production costs; this is especailly noticable in the crowds running for their lives, but if you run the dvds at fractional speeds while characters are walking from one side to another, you will see something funny.

There is a bit of recycling here and there in the 1980 series as well. In the Birth of Astroboy, Astro does a loop while flying as he is about to rescue people from the fire caused by the robot car. I noticed the same loop a few days ago in the Crystal of the Desert. There are a few other shots of Astro flying that are reused by the same artist who drew Astro in other episodes. There's also one where Astro hits Atlas in The Rainbow Comet and...? The Anti-Proton Gun maybe? Or the end of the Crystal Castle, even if they were drawn by different artists? I think had posted this particular one either in the random observations thread or the mistakes thread.

Of course, the 1980 team had a lot more means than the 1963 team, so there are a lot less loops and recycling of than there were in the 1963 series. The most reused pictures are also for crowd running or characters talking.

I can't recall these things in the 2003 series (that I haven't watched in two years... ). In fact, loops make it so easy to make animated gifs that I kind of miss them in the 2003 series, because it makes it harder to find good sequences! It's a lot easier for the 1980 series, and it seems that the possibilities for animated gifs that loop well are endless in the 1963 series! While it's not exactly something we could consider to be of great qualities today, considering this was the first anime, it kind of makes the series charming in a way. :)

Can you describe please? :)

(And for those unfamiliar with the series, there is the explanation of what was happening in the last picture, look at Astro.)

I probably noticed the cheapness while capturing frames that I wanted you to make into animated gifs. When characters are walking, they move faster than they walk. I mean, their legs move, but every nth frame, they simply slide along, without any change in the foreground except its position. I found a really cute clip of Atom walking along whistling a tune & the notes were flowing out of his mouth, but he simply slid along on too many frames. It would have made a really cute gif, if only it were fluid.
