Movie was based on a 1930's pulp fiction SF novel by Wylie and Balmer. There was a sequel to the book, "After worlds collide" but they never made a sequel to the movie. I didn't read your "apartheid" message in the book or the film, I believe the screen writers simply wanted to choose a third world setting which made sense for the plot. If you were funding the construction of an "Ark" to save humanity, you'd want it built far from any major population centers to keep control once the 'crap hit the fan'. What the story got wrong was that you'd want some degree of diversity in the Ark's population, but there was quite a bit of xenophobia in the mindset at that time.

Yes of course. But that was the let down. No diversity. totally anti united nations. They could never get away with such a thing today. But it was noteworthy after WW2. AND the hero from the most racist state on earth?
