Well, if I had had a dictionary readily encoded somewhere, I could have writen a program that splits the words according to what is in the dictionary, provided there are no ambiguities (and you can bet there are). Given the time needed to write the program, I guess that doing it by hand was the quickest way to do it. Less than 9 minutes is a good score
Reconstructing an entire book might be quicker with a program, although the ambiguities would still to be worked out. Reading natural language is an active research field, even such a "simple" problem.
The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.
