Although to be honest, it does look pretty cool. I'm not sure if it was done with moving pictures or not, but it seems highly likely.

I think it was done with with a lightbox. Like, taking bits of paper and moving them around, snapping a picture, rinse and repeat kinda thing. (The same way they make South Park, lawls).

This was actually one of the first styles of animation. :3 Along with the art of shadow puppets (Which were used in the film The Adventures of Prince Achmed. Pretty neat stuff, actually.
