SEPTEMBER SEVENTH NINTEEN SIXTIE THREE

Postby ASTROBUDDY » 15 years ago

Here is a date we should commemorate, although this year is not a big anniversary,(but in three years it will be a big one!) I'm talking about the day "Astro Boy"! No, not "TetsuWan Atomu"! "Astro Boy"! premiered! Sept. 7, 1963 is the date the English version of the original "TetsuWan Atomu" show known as "Astro Boy" made its debut outside Japan and in the U.S.A.! The one that started it all! So let's all celebrate the 47th anniversary with a:
"GO, ASTRO BOY"!
"CATCH THE FUTURE"!

I  :astro: :D

I seem to remember seeing it come through from Connecticut before it premiered in NYC on WNEW - the reception was snowy (maybe it was UHF or was that VHF?), and McDonald's was the sponsor -- back before Ronald McDonald. cool!

Cool. My Daddy first saw that series on NBC. I wish I got to see it aired, but thank god for DVD's and YouTube. :D HOORAY ASTRO BOY!

I wish YouTube worked on this miserable computer... I bet it works in the library. But I need headphones in order for that to work for me...

Hi, AprilSeven! Wow! You must have some memory! While every reference source I know states that the program premiered on WNEW, I think it amazing that you remember it different! Its like when I read in an early source that stated the series premiered on WPIX, when I remember it being on WNEW! (That's why I stated that "Sept. 7, 1963 was the date the show premiered in the U.S.A." and not a particular city!) Its like I read that the original Star Trek although listed as premiering on Thursday, Sept. 8,1966, it actually premiered the evening before in Canada! And McDonald before Ronald! The mind boggles! My own memories of Astro Boy are mainly of the theme song! Although one particular episode did stick out in my mind, which I now know as the episode, "Strange Voyage"! I also have distinct memories of a character named "Princess Papaya Petal" from the episode, "Sea Serpent Isle"! Do you have any such memories of a particular episode or character?

I  :astro: :D

Hi, Anime Girl 14! Are you sure you mean to say your dad saw the series on NBC, because both Frederik Schodt and Fred Ladd say that while NBC distributed the series in syndication, the show did not air on the network itself due, I believe, to laws that prevented them from showing shows they owned or produced on their own network as this violated anti-trust laws.
But still it may have aired in the particular market you father saw the show on what was maybe an NBC affliate! Any way I agree with your sentiment of "thank God for DVDs and YouTube!"

I  :astro: :D
