It's a very obvious control console. If anything goes wrong with Astro, someone from the Ministry of Science can type numeric commands on that keyboard and see numeric responses on the one-line screen above it.

I think that the 2009 one to be completely re-done (his chest door isn't even always visible); the '03 series had a 'heart' in it and maybe it was based on the original.
