O.K., for now, I will only touch on a few details, but this set has stuff I never even imagined. There are three books here, two magazine sized, one about an inch less in both width & height, but very thick; this is the CHRONICLES. Of the other 2, 1 is rather thin; this is NOT
Atom Taishi, but a MIGHTY ATOM story BASED upon it, as its title (in English) indicates. The other one is the stories that followed the BK tetralogy, though lacking those from the MIGHTY ATOM magazine, about 500 pages.
- ATOM TAISHI* is about 100 pages, most grayscale, a few with some colors.
- THE CHRONICLES, Very impressive! each page is dated, apparently from the daily installments in the newspaper.
- Other stuff: among them, 4th Grade student <Study Magazine> 1 Astro Returns, has content I never dreamed of. Also, the cutesy comics of vol 23 have much more detail; the Mantler appears in SPACE BUG, BUT does not spank Atom.
More to come.
Hi, Jeffbert! I was perusing the Tezuka webpage re: Unit 7 and I noticed that what you refer to as a story based on Mighty Atom is actually what I believe to be the first collected reprinting of Atomu Taishi. In the TetsuWan Atomu DaiZukan aka the Astro Boy Encyclopedia which features information about every Atom manga story, it shows that in 1953, the Atomu Taishi serial was collected and reprinted in one volume with the English title, "The Space Travelers", instead of "Captain Atom" as when originally published. I wonder if this is the source material for the Atomu Taishi chapter that was reprinted in the Kodansha series of the complete works of Tezuka as opposed to the version that was adapted into English for the Dark Horse reprints. As you know supposedly pages were missing when the story was reprinted. (I wonder if Tezuka deliberately kept them from being reprinted as they may have shown how poor his artwork was in the beginning or because Atom looks so different then from how he now appears.) Any way thought you would want to know just in case you already did not know. Also what is the "BK tetralogy"? The Blue Knight? (Also too bad they are not reprintng stories from the AB Club magazine because as you know that is where two of the missing stories were originally printed.

O.k., On the book's cover are the "MIGHTY ATOM" in both J & E; below is a small image of what I take to be the original cover, with green Japanese 5 or 6 characters, below which is 4 characters. below which is "THE TRAVEL**S" where * indicates the letters are covered by an image. p1 has similar text, but no image. 2 starts with the panel shown here:
http://tezukaosamu.net/en/manga/13.html after you click the right arrow. Though it is a bit different, as Tenma's gaze is downward in the book.
P3: "THE SPACE TRAVELLERS" (TOP)
"BASED ON CAPTAIN ATOM BY [SIGNATURE DOODLE] TEZUKA."
The image is MILKY WAY in center, space ships moving away from center toward edges. 4 & 5 dark blue ink on white: Tz intros story while sitting on grassy hill at night. 6 & 7: shades of orange & green w/ black lines (no shading). Through p18, 2 pages of color (as described) alternate with 2 of indigo (?), shading is by crosshatching.
