Atlas included in the 'final 7'

Postby Photar » 14 years ago

Just wondering if Atlas and Livian hadnt turned into a black hole and imploded on the alien base would Atlas do you think have been on the Sultan's hit-list in 'Greatest Robot in the World'. I get the feeling that Brondo and Hercules werent robots with an overriding sense of justice - they were just meat-heads. So maybe an evil robot like atlas had his place in the list.

Just throwing that out there

In the proper episode order, they were still alive at the time. It was only the English TV broadcast that put The Greatest Robot in the World after their "deaths".

As to why Atlas wasn't on the list - Astro's ongoing battle with Atlas and his crystal castle was something that was created especially for the 80s series. The Greatest Robot in the World was in the old manga, so the 7 robots had already been invented for that story. It wouldn't have made much sense to add Atlas as an 8th robot, partly because he didn't fit anywhere in the The Greatest Robot storyline and partly because Tezuka wanted Astro's struggle with Atlas to be ongoing and without clear resolution (in a more general sense like good vs evil).

But it's something I've thought about too. Who would win between Atlas and Bruton? Not even Astro could defeat Bruton. And who would win between Atlas and Bora?

I was also going to mention the episode order. But going from the rough translation from Japanese, isn't the real title "The Greatest Robot on Earth"? Since Atlas didn't live on Earth most of the time and as a result didn't belong to any country, perhaps he wouldn't have mattered to the sultan. Many years ago, somebody else pointed out that the story seemed to represent a war between countries, perhaps even for oil.

I think Atlas would have won easily against Bruton because Bruton lacked mobility, not being able to fly very effectively. I think it left him vulnerable. If Atlas could defeat a bunch of aliens, he could have defeated him. Of course, then he should also have been able to defeat Astro; I don't know if this was a conscious choice or not, but it's as if he couldn't make himself destroy his brother, or at least not destroy him using powers that were not within himself, such as using the crystal castle or another mean.

I don't know who would have won between Bora and Atlas. We didn't get to see a lot from Bora. I haven't read the manga so I don't know if the fight ends the same way, but I have always wanted to ask Abra (?) how he could seem to be so sure that Astro would defeat Bora. It seems to me that Astro was a little lucky there!

BTW, Bruton's mean to fly is so weird. I've always wanted to know how he looked inside, surely he was at risk of having a few wires getting tangled. :p

Yeah the fight between Astro and Bora is certainly one for discussion. I mean seriously it was only through the fluke of bora's hand being grinded off by his tail-wheel that lead to two things: A clear indication of Bora's lack of any real intelligence but also the ability for astro to fly in and start destroying him from the inside like a cancer!

Here are my predicitions:

Mt Blanc: Simply no chance. Bora would have shut him down with that growl and just jumped on him like he did with Bruton. I doubt Mt Blanc would have even had the strength to drag Bora by the tail given the effort it took Bruton who had ten times the power. Which leads me to another point......if Mt Blanc was the next strongest robot after Bruton that doesnt say much for the horsepower of brute-strength robots like Brondo and Hercules.

Molnar: Ok forget Boras growl for a moment. I think personally Molnar would have just crapped himself and hit his self destruct button.

Brondo: He certainly wouldve gone in hell for leather but once again, if Mt Blanc possessed 135K horse power and , as sultan said, was the next strongest robot, Im curious to know how the big fella would have handled it. Would his spinning ball-form have been able to envelop Bora? I really dont think any of his awesome wrestling moves would have allowed him to gain top pisition and put Bora in an arm bar leading to a 'tap out' on Boras nehalf. So yeah Brondo also falls out of the possibility category

Ziron: Once again forgetting Boras growl. Zirons speed could have enabled him to gain a tactical position but what really could he have done. HIs magnetic beams barely graze Bruton and if the suicide bomb didnt even scratch Bora then I think Ziron may have had to beat a hasty retreat. But assuming he fought on, Im throwing it out there that a squashing between Boras two halves wouldve been a possible outcome.

Hercules: Sorry but the spear wouldve bounced off and even his missle head and arms wouldnt have even made Bora shift a centimetre. Shoield ray? You never really get an idea of how strong these weapons are so even that and his magnetic beams I dont think wouldve hurt the big two headed behemoth that much. My guess, Hercules charges, gets grabbed by bora and crushed between his hands

Photar: Now on a sunny day I think he could have flown high and laid a nice energetic sun-powered charge onto Bora like he did to Bruton. I personally think given his status as a photon robot then he could have used the limitless energy afforded him to melt Bora from a safe distance. But of course Im biased so who am I kidding.............

What do you think?
