Was Real Steel inspired by Astro Boy? (SPOILERS MAY AWAIT YOU)

Postby Bender the Sniper » 13 years ago

I just saw the Hugh Jackman robot movie Real Steel today, and I noticed a striking resemblance between the film's plot and "Uran's Twin" from the 80s you-know-what, especially the robot boxing concept. Also, in the film, the kid's robot's name is--you guessed it--Atom. Coincidence, anyone?

It's based or at least mostly based on Richard Matheson's short story called Steel. It was also made into an episode of the original Twilight Zone. But the similarities are striking and a fan of Astro Boy may have possibly worked on the screenplay
"Expose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes. You are free."
-Jim Morrison

"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great ones make you feel that you, too, can become great."
-Mark Twain

You mean of course the screenplay for the movie, right? (Since Matheson adapted his own short story for television!) What an interesting postulate!

I've seen that (as I've stated in the other thread). Yes, the main character is Atom. Pretty good film.

I thought about it when I heard Atom. But meh, I don't really think so story wise. Funny how Astro Boy can't be called Atom but they allow it for a punching robot. o_o
