Hello Dannavy,

I saw the link to your fanfic on the thread that AprilSeven posted but I thought it was more appropriate to post this comment in this thread. I was curious about your story so I decided to read it. I think the dynamic between Mars and Atlas is interesting. Despite that the two have somewhat similar backgrounds (like they both have strict fathers), the two have very different personalities that clash.

However, I do think you over exaggerated Mars’s mischievous nature. Mars is mischievousness is more playful than crude. Rather than throwing crude insults at others, he’d rather play practical jokes. A lot of the insults that Mars said in this fic are things that Mars probably couldn’t come up with because he’s too young. Most of the time, he’s just having fun and he doesn’t intend to make enemies. He even played a joke on Miri once and he loves Miri a lot. Although Mars has flaws (hey, we all do) Mars isn’t a mean-spirited kid.

Mars is also very naive and innocent. I don’t think that he would make sexual jokes. He might joke by asking “Do you like Epsilon?” but I don’t think he would make sexual references. He wouldn’t understand that kind of humor in the first place because of his age.

If Astro and Atlas made him clean up the vehicles he might not expect that they’re doing this to spite him because he’s naïve. He might wonder why they made him to this, however and if he doesn’t like what he’s doing, he probably would just leave.

Not to say that there are situations where Mars would get angry and throw an insult or two. He does have his bratty moments; he’s very much like a young human child. He mischievous but he’s also playful and naive. The issue that I have is that Mars’s characterization is a bit one sided and over exaggerated.

Mars, Atom, Astro... What a mess in my head right now !!

I just begin to make the difference between all the series where we find the same character Mars-Atom-Astro...

Im sorry if I missed the train maybe, but what about Atlas with Mars ? Atlas were against Atom-Astro ... against Mars too ?

I need some coffee to clean up my mind a bit...

I actually enjoyed the personality he gave to Mars, but then, I've only seen a few of his episodes compared to Astro. Mars struck me as an almost arrogant, self-centered version of Astro - but not a human-hater like Atlas.

I thought Mars referring to Astro as "Knock-off" was a riot, especially since HE'S the "knock-off."

And I sure hope Mt. Fuji DOESN'T erupt any time soon, although I gather that is a distinct possibility.

Episilon's part in this story took me by surprise too.

To make things clear, Mars is a completely different character than Astro. What they share is that Mars was created by Osamu Tezuka at a time when his rights to Astro weren't secured due to the bankrupt of Mushi Productions. So he created a different character that would "replace" Astro for the time being. Due to this historical context, he is often seen as some kind of relative, if not as Astro himself in an alternate universe.

As for Atom/Astro , Atom is his Japanese name, while Astro his English name.

In the 2003 series I think he is actually called 'Astro' even in the Japanese language. At least the frame where Dr. O'shay sees the word "Astro" on a piece of equipment was in English, which is something that the Japanese animators often did, use both English and Japanese lettered signs in the artwork. I don't think this would have been changed in the English dubbed DVD.

Yes, that's the one. Dr. O'Shay saw that while trying to think of a new name for Tobio.
Of course, it ALSO spells ATOM vertically, so it works both ways. (I didn't see that watching the video, but still frame it and there it is!). Sony obviously had in mind more than the Japanese market for the series.....
Now I can't quite read the wording on the emblem.....

I would say (guess?) it is "the science and technology department", which would fit well for "ministry of science".

Oh, thank you very much for this explanation about Astro/Atom and Mars. I see more clearly the difference between the two characters.
