But in the manga, his first adventures (after Ambassador Atom) started 10 years after his birth.[/QUOTE] That is interesting! While I don't remember anything about the first "Mighty Atom" story taking place ten years after "Ambassador Atom" that would account for the belief that Astro Boy takes place in 2012 or 2013 or there about.

Although the general acceptance is that "Astro Boy" begins in the year 2003 and if we are to accept 2017 as the year he goes into the sun that is a span of more than ten years. Since the original manga adventures span 18 years, (counting 4/51--when the first chapter of "Ambassador Atom" appears to 2/69, when the last chapter of "the Atom "Once Upon a Time" tales appear) then it is conceivable that 2017 is the right year. (Or maybe not!) Any way, it has been fun trying to figure this out.
Any way great question Dannavy 85!

And it appears Astro's adventures take place over the space of at least 10 years . . . in 1960's anime "Super Duper Robot" Astro comments to Uran that "it's been 10 years since I was built" . . . and in the manga "Atom is Stolen" he is given a body to test out which put him at age 18 (and it was to bring his 10-year old body up to date with what his chronological age would actually be)

My guess (and it's only that) is that he would have flown into the sun sometime after 2013.

Thank you, AprilSeven for the info! Still don't know exactly how we ended up with 2017, but it is now obvious that within the confines of the episodes there was a longer time stream than was shown in real world time. After all, according to real world time Astro Boy went into the sun in 1966.
