Hope I made your day there! I seem to have a knack for sometimes saying something that unintentionally cracks someone up. Your remark reminded me of a get together with friends many years ago. We were talking about the first episode of STTNG and someone asked me what I thought of the new aliens they had introduced, the Ferengi. I remarked that I thought they were a joke like "Polish Klingons". My remark caused one of my friends to snort cola out his nose. (Yeah I know that was not a politically correct wise crack. Still many night club comics get away with that sort of thing by treating all nationalities equally, including their own. Guess that's why Don Rickles was so funny. )
Back on the subject, I'm sure that Tezuka did that scene with the shorts and tush spanking as a joke and Atom's shorts aren't really supposed to be removable. His head is also not held on by a single wire either (I've lost track how many times it fell off). He also had robots run so fast that they split in half with the feet going faster than the torso that hung in mid air. These things didn't really happen and none of the characters saw them happen, like the candle on Lamp's head. (Though SOMETIMES that candle became REAL for a double gag!). In fact, Tezuka sprinkles quite a few sight gags into the anime, and they are intended ONLY for the audience, the anime characters don't know they happen. I might add that he hardly did that in the 1980 series, and his studio didn't put ANY sight gags (not even a single Hyotantsugi) in the 2003 series. Maybe that's why many of us find the original 1960's version so endearing.
