I just watched all six parts of this storyline in a row, and WOW. That was epic, sad, and had plenty of plot-twists. :)

Punch-Out: Astro Style!

Starring: Astro as Little Mac, Dr. Elefun as the Referee, and Daddy Walrus as the Fat guy Who Makes You Wear a Pink Jogging Suit!

Those are what made me like this series! There's a lot missing in the regular episodes (series aimed at a younger public, Astro not shown going to school or home with his family...), but the depth of the overall plot is what redeems it, in my opinion. :)

Without this, I would probably not have found this forum. :D

Me too, but I wouldn't have bothered to type "Astro Boy" in Google if it hadn't been for those last episodes. ;)

That last episode was probably the only episode I've ever seen of ANY of the three series that actually made me want to cry.

It was the happiest ending for any of the series:

Manga: Astro flys straight into the sun and dies.

Manga 2: Astro is rebuilt, forgets everything, goes off with aliens, and is never seen again.

60's: Astro flys straight into the sun and dies.

80's (Japanese version): Astro talking to himself, then to people living in another universe (us), and flys off saying "Goodbye!"

80's (some markets): Astro mourns the death of Atlas and Livian.

80's (some markets): Astro and Dr. Elefun mourn the deaths of the world's strongest robots and Bruton.

Omega Factor: Astro and Nuka fly straight into the sun, die, are brought back to life by Phoenix, and fly back to Earth.

03: Tenma finally sees the light, robots finally get equal rights, all the criminals are behind bars (except maybe Skunk), Astro is sad, his friends and sister cheer him up, and everything is right.

It was perfect.

For all of the 2003 series' faults this arc pretty much redeems it all.

It's worth saying that the series as a whole though had it's pluses. Even if it did make storylines much more child-friendly than the Manga and pervious series. It had a plot that did actually delve deeper into the relationships Astro shared with others and his own stuggles. Rather than just the worlds stuggles and Astro having to deal with them.

It's a shame the 2003 series doesnt quite get everything in gear till this arc though. The moment that always gets me is in the final episode when Astro just goes up to Tenma, hugs him and forgives him for everything. Kudos for Sony keeping it in.
