In the Dark Horse manga vol 21 page 8, Osamu Tezuka says he was hooked on Pinocchio at the time of creating Astroboy. (although he doesn't specifically say he created Astroboy in Pinocchio's image)

On the topic of Fist of the North Star, the first time I saw the promo clip for it I was really shocked. I don't think I've ever seen animation so violent and gory. But I've come to look at it in the same way as you now. The catch slogan is "an epic assualt on the senses" and that's what it is, in a sort of over-the-top way. I don't think it can be taken really seriously. It's so far out there I'm not even sure it can take itself seriously. But I haven't seen the actual show so I can't comment further. Looks like kind of an early milestone anime though, like Akira but less so. Or at least more genre specific.

I viewed XXX and most other action films in the same way as Fist. They all seem intent on nothing more than one-upping the latest action film in terms of fantastic escapes, stunt driving, explosions, etc. I think this started back when Roger Moore began playing James Bond. That series had always had a twist of humor, but even more so with the new lead actor. It went from almost believable to laughable, and has continued to try to beat its own previously established standards for stunts.

So, there I was in the theatre laughing myself red in the face, while others sat in silence as the dumbest and most unbelievable scenes are shown. I suppose some were bothered by this, but they probably thought poorly of those films, because they were too unbelievable. B-movies one and all, :wahah: and I feel that one cannot appreciate them as anything but B-movies.

'Plan B From Outer Space' was once nominated as the worst movie ever .
Though I never saw this one, I can imagine how funny it must be to watch this film .

'Plan B From Outer Space' was once nominated as the worst movie ever .
Though I never saw this one, I can imagine how funny it must be to watch this film

The first time I saw it was 3 am on some local channel. Needless to say, there were commercial interuptions. But I could not tell when the film ended (the segment anyway), and the commercials began, because it was so dumb.

I did not find it particulary funny, though. Try the Ed Wood Story first.

I bet it seved some sort of subconcious part in Astros creation. In other words, he got the idea from Pinocchio and didn't even think about it. I've done that.

I think, Astro's greatest resemblence with Pinocchio shows in the 80's ep
'The Hijacked Airship'. I can't remember any other episode where he has that
urge to be a human. He wasn't able of having dreams like his classmates, so he
asked Dr. Elephan to remove his ultra-powers for one day B) .

In the 60s version episode 1, Astroboy eats a doughnut, opens his chest, removes it and puts it back on the plate. His eyes look downward and his expression says it all. he is sadly thinking, "I'm not a real boy, just a robot."

that is so pitiful! Alas, I haven't had yet the opportunity to watch one
ep of the 60's series . It must be very heartwarming . I can speak only for the 80's
eps which I saw as I was a kid:
In ep 1, after his lunch Astro opens his chest door, the chewed food fall out and he disintegrates it with his laser. In this scene he doesn't look particularly sad though.
