Hi, I'm Shychick. I'm a new member. Is this true what I heard about the 80s series being released on DVD?? Oh man, that would be so sweet!!!
Welcome Shychick! Yep, hopefully the DVDs will be out by Christmas according to the company releasing it.
BTW- could somebody please explain to me what these cuts are all about?
When Astroboy was dubbed into English in 1981, the first two episodes had 24 minutes cut and the remnants were joined to make one episode.
The following episodes had the occassional scene cut where there was excessive violence (people on fire, getting shot, etc). We're hoping this doesn't interfere with a Japanese language track on the upcoming DVDs.
It's funny, because when I first watched "The Birth of Astro Boy" of the 80s version, I remembered that pic of Boynton standing over Toby in the hospital, and Toby had a bandage on his head. Is that from that particular ep?
Yeah, that was from episode 1 and it was cut out. From the English dub anyway, I don't know about other languages.
Oh yeah, and they also cut out the very beginning, before the opening song began- you know where this narrator was talking, and it showed "Toby"/Astro being created. All I recall of it is "... a robot, in the form of a child. As Prof. Boynton brings his creation to life, little does he realize he has created more than just a robot. He has created the world's greatest hero- a hero called ASTRO BOY!" Or somethig like that. Anybody fill me in on my questions, puh-leaze?
Neither the English nor Japanese versions contain this, but the French version does. I've heard there was a second English dub broadcast in Canada, it may have appeared in that one but I'm just guessing. So you heard it spoken in English?
Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed, but I won't get my hopes up... just in case. But I did hear that they won;t be releasing any DVDs until the movie is released in '05.
That's probably the 2003 TV series, since Columbia/Sony are doing that one and the movie. It makes sense for them to co-ordinate the release for mamimum exposure and sales.
