This idea of all CGI and live action combination is I think the biggest strike against it. Of course, I would rather have the same group behind Jungle Emperor Leo and Metropolis overlooking the thing (some sort of Osamu Tezuka preservation/proliferation society??!! ;) Odds are most certainly against it, but suppose for a moment this director is a hardcore fan of Astroboy, he might find a way to make it good even given everything stacked against it.

Er, uh, anyway, speaking of Ringu, while I really enjoyed the film, Dark Water was SO MUCH BETTER it was hard to believe Ringu had gotten so much attention. And now The Grudge has already got a remake? The Grudge also seems like nothing that special. Admittedly, I think Japanese cinema has once again come into its own and is making a lot of highly original films, but it seems pretty random which ones get here.

Boy....Battle of the Planets/Gatchaman fandom went through a self-destructive explosion in 2002 because they went to war against themselves and Alex Ross over his attempts to bring that cartoon back and Ross did a damn good attempt.

I think the closest we've come to a live action Astro boy was Spielberg's "A.I.", damn good movie but I wouldn't even want him to have Astro Boy.

Orlando Bloom though...would make a damn cool Inuyasha.

Genndy it seems loves many anime, He gave a camio appearence to Keyop from BTOH during that Jack episode where Aku was reading to that crowd of kids and there was a brief Chibi appearence by Kiki and her cat in another.

The challenge of a live action/CGI will be daunting, who do you get for the soundtrack? John Horner? A Japanese? The Boston Pops?

eeesh...this is a real risk.

I personally would've preferred pure animation, but as long as the CGI is high quality (and by this I mean say...Lord of the Rings quality), then I'm truly looking forward to it :)

wildpegasus: Tartakovsky's Samurai Jack show is awesome..
w0rd!

Any chance this series will hit DVD? Cos I will buy it when it does. Those of us In Oz withought Cable only get to see this at 5am or something pathetic like that. I have only seen about 5 or 6 episodes but I have found every one of them wonderful. I also Loved the PowerPuff Girls and Dexpters Lab as well. THe Speed Racer Parody is an all time classic imo.

I have not seen Dark water OR The Grudge yet but as both of these movies are now released here in Oz thru Madmans EASTERN EYE label I am hoping like crazy one of the two Video Stores in my area gets them in. As much as I like 'foreign film' I do not like it enough to order anything site unseen for the better cost of $40. I am a tightbum tho and almost never pay more than $20 for any single DVD no matter what it is.

WHere the hell was I when Gatchaman was released!? OMG!! I have been waiting for this series to be released for like 10 years! the first two things I looked up online when I got my very first internet connection from home was Astroboy and BotP. It was then I discovered BotP/G-Force/Eagle Riders was "Butchered Gatchaman" and was DETERMINED to eventually see the true version. I have done a search online and I can not find it on DVD so I would love linkage for this Dan please (or anyone).

Another Series that was "massacred" was Robotek. That was another series I liked a fair bit when I was in High School, but it did not really strike me as much as BotP or Astro. I am amazingly slow on this one as I did not know Robotec was Macross/Southern Cross/Mospeada until about a year or so ago. I have full intention of Butong these three original series when I manage to stop spending money elsewhere and can actually save enough to afford them. :)

Yeah thats one way to look at it I guess. We shal see soon enough I expect. I would perhaps prefer it to look a little more Ice Age tho myself. I loved the way that movies looked amagingly cartoonezque and yat was still in pure 3D. They can't really go "Pixar" with it tho I would think as I am not sure how well that style of 3d would blend with live footage.

Ultimately, as long as Astro's HEART is still there, I could see a puppet show. (notice I again work Brian Henson into the work. heh) If the movie "IS" Astroboy then all is good. I believe Tartakovsky knows what he is doing and have faith in him. If he does for astroboy with this movie what he did for Star Wars with CLONE WARS (which imo is better than episode 2.) then it will be wonderful.

I don't watch Dexter's Lab but have heard a few mention of the Speed Racer parody. How good is it?

Samurai Jack is different than Astroboy though. It'll be interesting to see how the movie turns out.

Ok.....here's an e-mail to a friend of mine back in Rhode Island who can help you with that. E-Mail here and tell her that Danny "Squid Hakase" sent you to talk to her about the real Gatchaman and she'll hook you right up.

I read as much as I could from the comics and tried to take away the heart and gist of it.

LOL, I hope he meant that in the good way!

The producer of the upcoming Astroboy film, Don Murphy, has a message board set up for fan suggestions. He does read the posts, so let him know your ideas be known. There have not been many posts, and none recently, so here is a link showing the posts from the beginning:
http://www.donmurphy.net/board/forumdispla...e=1000&x=17&y=8

Variety article: http://donmurphy.net/astroboy_variety.html

Check out Murphy's other movie boards as well:

Tranformers is the obvious leader in fan participation, but hopefully Astroboy will become second.

i think Sony's selection of Don Murphey and his gang is a mistake and an error.
They ruined League of gentleman.
I think they will screw it up. Like those dorks that produced "Lost in Space" the movie.
And those dorks that did the dubbed TV show.
Get someone else. but if not be prepared for a flop.
