What's funny Jeffbert?

I think the joke is the ZSNES referance. Usually you refer to a game's platform by it's hardware, rather than an unauthorised emulator. :D

What's funny Jeffbert? Do you imagine the huge dragon Fafner in his cave playing to an old SNES game, delicately handling the pad in his claws? :D

No, but I was attempting to respond to a posting in a different thread, but somehow ended up putting it in this one. As I could not retract the thing entirely, I edited it, leaving nothing but a smile. I think it was in the Sword of Vengeance thread.

Yes, you're right, that's quite weird :D
However the emulator is not unautorized. That's what Nintendo want us to believe. I play regularly with that emulator, and I am sure it is legal. What is illegal is to use it to play games you have never bought.
Strictly speaking, I am not always in the law after all... there are a few games I never bought as I never saw them anywhere here in Europe, and I am sure it is not possible to buy them now. So who am I stealing? ;)

I was careful to use the word unauthorised rather than illegal. No console manufacturer would be happy with an emulator. They make most of their money back by selling the game cartridges/discs. I think the legality of emulators varies from country to country, not to mention the emulators vs roms issue.

Having said that, I'm guessing a SNES emulator would be running obsolete and unavailable stuff, so I could well be wrong about the authorisation issue.

Oh yes, but the manufacturer of the original hardware can't "authorize" or "forbid" the usage of an emulator. If no usage of such a thing is fair, then the manufacturer may legitimately push in the voting of a law forbidding its usage. Otherwise the manufacturer can only push for laws forbidding only the unfair use, and that's exactly how it is now, at least in Europe and USA.
And about running "obsolete stuff", although it may be considered as "fair use" since no one loses money in the process, it is illegal anyway, unless the original author has released the product in public domain. Many website allowing download of abandonware often have to deal with original author of products sending them cease and desist warning even though said author don't sell anymore the product. Of course those websites are technically infriging copyrights and original authors are on their rights ;)
