How long did it take to dub an episode, and what did the cast members do when their characters weren't featured? Did they get a few days off work?

No, I don't know anything about a Canadian dub. I was surprised to learn of it from all of you. I don't know why such would be necessary, unless Nippon TV sold rights to the series like franchises, country by country, with each providing its own new voice tracks.

We got weekends off. Usually the day started at 10 and ended at 4 or 5, but towards the end it would go until 10 or even midnight. Thanks to the long days and all the different voices in each episode, a lot of us developed thoat problems and colds.

And lip-matching was a skill that we got better at as we went. It would roughly take a day and a half or two to do an episode, but some went more quickly than others. What really took time was then editing all the scenes back together, selecting the best takes, and so on.

Patty (Astro) was pregnant during the pilot, so she was busy with her newborn baby when she wasn't working on the series. Richard also worked as a waiter, like all actors. For most of us, this was our only job, just because there wasn't time to do anything else.

Jay, I noticed that many characters seemed to have the same voices. Fireball shares a voice actress with the little Viking boy and the dolphin, Skunk seems to have lent his voice to Prof. Hyde, Atlas shares with Satan, etc.

One of the funniest cases I can recall is the voices for the bad guys in C. Eastwood's Spaghetti Westerns are the same as bad guys in Speed Racer. Capt Terror = Ramone or one of his henchmen.

Speed's particular vocal qualities were shared by Mark (the navigator) on Star Blazers III. :D I never expected to hear that voice from anybody but Speed himself! :P Sparky seems to have lent his voice to a gunnery officer on that show, but sometimes he sounds more like Snake Oiler.

We never anticipated that the show would be available on video -- let alone small, shiny discs played by a laser! That was science fiction stuff. So the idea that fans could play and replay (and replay! ;) episodes, taking in every detail, never occurred to us. I only have a couple episodes on video myself.

We tried to come up with as many new voices as possible, but in the end I guess there were only so many. (On the other hand, I hope there are lots of episodes where you can't figure out who did what.)

The range of some of our performers was pretty limited. Dave Miller and I were used mostly as utility players, filling in everywhere.

It might be interesting to know that there were several "lifts." I mimicked (or tried to) radio actor Harold Peary ("The Great Gildersleeve") and Lionel Barrymore in episodes; also Popeye's soto voce for Pucko the Duck. Freddie grew out of Arnold Stang, minus the lisp. Dave Miller did an impression of Del Lewis, our director, in another episode (I don't know the Del ever caught on).

Jay what can I say except thank you for one of the most informative and enjoyable reads I've had in quite a while!

I really don't think you could grasp just how huge this show was/is in Australia without living through it here.

Please keep whatever thoughts you have flowing here and try to round up some other actors for us!
I'm warning you Astro!
