Astro Boy Fansubs

I'm starting a classic anime fansub group and one of the projects I would like to do is the original 1963 Japanese Astro Boy. Our first project is going to be the 1966 Cyborg 009. I got someone to translate that movie just to help start out the group, but he won't be able to work on any other projects. I was wondering if anyone here knows Japanese well enough to get a good translation of the series. Subbing the whole series is a pretty unrealistic goal, but if there was a translator that would be willing to do that (I'm not expecting to find one) then that may be something we could work towards. I was more thinking about subbing some of the episodes from the Japanese "Best Collection" DVDs, which are only 20 dollars each and feature three episodes. I already ordered the first one which features episode 1, episode 37 (Where Uran is introduced), and episodes 93 (Which features Cobalt).

I'm very interested. This is one of the reasons I started learning Japanese. B) Unfortunately my poor health and memory loss has prevented me from getting any further with my studies so my Japanese sucks.

I'm good at research however, so I'd take a shot at translating a transcript (using a mix of Japanese dictionaries and -ugh- web translators, from either the kana/kanji or romaji). I also know my way around a few codecs and sub streams.
I don't have an ear for transcribing Japanese though.

Using the Best Collection DVDs is a good idea. I believe episodes 1 and 93 were dubbed into English. I know they changed stuff, but perhaps these could help too.

I'm looking for someone who is fairly proficient in Japanese and would be able to translate straight from the episodes. The Japanese DVDs don't have Japanese subtitles and I am not sure if I could find someone that would be able to transcribe them, but not translate. I'd also rather not work from the english dubs, since the shows were edited and much was changed. It would be great if you could help out with some other things though! We just need to find someone who is well versed in Japanese that could translate and we can start working on things.

I reccomend starting with the episodes that were based upon manga. If you are interested, I can web publish my table showing those stories. Atoman has the entire series on DVD, & he has been kind enough to share it with me. I still have much work to do, but I can publish that table withing a week.

Why should we start with the episodes based on the manga? I want to be able to find a good enough translator that can translate directly from the Japanese. I would really rather not use dialogue from any other source (whether it be the manga or the english dub). Does Atoman have the entire Japanese series on DVD, or DVDs of the american series made from the VHS tapes?

Because just in case. I'm pretty sure you are not going to find a person proficient in Japanese, English, and work for free...

And if you use another source, it would help to see if you are on the right track on the story.

That is how most fansub groups work, and there are tons of them. Usually the translator works for free because they love the material they are working with.

Because, after reading the manga story, you will be able to follow the plot even though you do not speak the language. Granted, there are some differences, but tough. However, I have found that most episodes' plots are made plain by the video. I can only understand a few words of Japanese, but there were only a few eps that stumped me.

I believe Atoman has the original Japanese DVDs.

He does indeed have the entire series on DVD.
