The kids need a mama & papa. Ochanomizu is too busy to give them the attention they need, & besides, Atom himself said it in Black Lux/Looks & Capetown Lullabye, something about a mother's warm embrace. :P

I volunteer! I WANNA ADOPT HIM too! I'd do better than Nora! :P

But something is lacking in the 2003 series. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but Astro himself seems a bit empty to me. I don't really enjoy some "cute" stories (ex: the Fairy Tale one, or the one in which the prince thinks he can fly), many episodes aren't dramatic enough to my taste, and I miss watching Astro in an "everyday life". For example, I miss the school/classmates scenes from the 1980 series. I thought it made him more human.

That's how I feel Astro Forever. The heart is missing.
The way the handled Bruton was a great example of this. The original was moving. You cared about the characters involved. 2003 comes and it's a rushed, pale copy. It feels like a contrived and clumsey attempt to replicate the feeling of the original by making the characters sort of the same.
Compare Zoron's actions on the story arc to Uran's. It broke my heart, the only heart involved in that collection of episodes.
Tenma is the best character in it by far.
Atlas is a snotty Californian surfer dude, only interesting because he is Atlas. (Like Ironhide became to Transformer fans).
I think they are trading on peoples existing love of the characters and so don't have to create new attachments with people, as they already exist.
I don't think it works that way though. It just makes me sad.
I do love the 1980's series and the manga so I guess I tend to compare them.
The animation is better now, of course, but where is the heart that makes Astroboy so special?
Is it just an empty box tied up with pretty paper and ribbons?

Did you see only the English language version? I saw both, & agree that the English language version had its heart left on the cutting room floor; however, I think the original lacked nothing except parents.

I think your whole post sums it up perfectly.
I've also seen it in Japanese and while it's not as bad, it's still lacking. There were significant plot changes to Tezuka's stories that had remained unchanged in the manga, 60s and 80s series. It got a typical Hollywood cardiosectomy. <_<

Hopefully they get it right in the 2023 series. :D

After two animated remakes of those stories, why make a third, unless one makes it a bit different? Even with the two previous animated remakes, most did include some differences from the manga. I could say more, but that is the whole point behind my web site that is way behind schedule. I hope to have something worthwhile by mid July.

It wasn't just the stories, they changed the whole essence of it. Even the Japanese people working on it were unhappy with the changes, but they were forced to compromise for the American market.

You are so right and it's so sad and very patronizing. Americans love Manga and Anima because it offers heart and interesting characters to go with the action.
There seems to be a belief that Americans WANT the heart taken out of their shows but then why do most fans go after the Japanese original? (This is the prevailing opinion on the One Piece forum I post on, mostly along with Americans, and the One-Piece dub kept the heart of the series somewhat better) It's obviously not what they want.
You can have your characters do the most amazing things but if you don't make them likeable and a little vunerable, who's gonna care?

As for not doing the same thing three times, I wish it was more different than it is.
Atlas, Epsilon (Photar), Pluto (Bruton) and Zoron (Uran) all appeared and where all done better in the previous incarnations. Pluto's story was basically the same as Bruton's but contrived)
It would have been better that to replace them all together that offer hollow copies.

Zoron, on the other hand (2003 series) is, for the most part, a whiny little wuse who uses a fraction of her power where Uran would stretch hers to it's limits.
I think Zoron is an insult to Uran (one of my childhood heroes)

Anyone else feel this way?

Partly, yeah. Nevertheless she has her appeals when she's acting like that.
