Well, anyone who prefers the Canadian/Global TV dub to the VHS dub (in spite of its inaccuracies to the original Japanese) now is your chance, I suppose.

Given that the Global TV dub is very likely in 2-channel stereo, it wouldn't be so bad as far as disc space is concerned. I am certain it is mostly a matter of securing the rights.

And since the TV Astro was heavily edited, I propose this:

- Uncut episodes, with uncut Japanese w/ English subtitles
- 2 English tracks, 1 for VHS and one for TV dub
- For parts that have no English dub, or at least no Global TV dub, I would settle for anything else, i.e. redubs or just subs. It wouldn't throw me of too much, personally. Just as long as I get the Canadian dubs, man...

- And I suppose the other option is to allow the various edits to be viewed optionally, e.g. choose whether to watch the unedited episode in its entirety, or the TV edit in its entirety. You don't see this often except for high profile series releases like Simpsons or Futurama. But it is indeed possible...

So that is my two cents. Email Manga and tell them what you want!!! I did! I know I am a greedy, picky bugger, but I am passionate as well. Yay Astro :wahah:

I've already e-mailed them and I never heard back.

Call me cynical, but I suspect entertainment companies are far more interested in making money than preserving classics or making comprehensive releases.

I'm lost here. Do you talk about the 1980 series or the 2003 one?

I suspect the English Canadian 1980 version is the same than the French version. If I didn't dream, another poster here said he had seen the game with the mistake at the end of the English Canadian version. In this case, I'd be very surprised if the episodes weren't exactly like the ones we saw in French which were heavily cut. It's not impossible that the game was just added at the end of the almost uncut regular English version since it would still fall below the 30 minutes mark, but somebody told me a few months ago that it would have made a total of 27 minutes, which would have been quite unusual.

So IF the English Canadian and French Canadian versions were the same, they'd be pretty hard to reconciled. It would be impossible for "Save the Carolina 3", for example, as Gene doesn't want to work in space in English but dreams of it in French. It would be odd with "Goliath's Head" as Goliath dies in English, but gets his head back in French. Same with "Astro's First Love" and "The Light Ray Robot". So basically, some episodes would have to be included twice!

And if they were to include the deleted scenes as extras, it would increase the number of DVDs by something between 20 and 25% (since about 3 to 4 minutes out of 21 were cut)!

Of course, all of this stands only if that version was cut the way it was in French. I would like to know for sure. Did you ever get the chance compare both versions, AtoMic domhnall?

That's not cynical, it is realistic. Am I cynical by stating that?
Anyway if many people write them the same thing, they will understand there is money to earn there, and might just do what we want... Am I realistic or optimistic by stating that?
The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.

I have faith that this report is accurate, because it was a correction in itself of an earlier rumor that said Anchor Bay was releasing the 60's series. Well Anchor Bay said no we're not, we don't have the rights to the 60's series, but our sister company Manga Entertainment will be releasing the 80's series this fall, and then it gave the details.

So there you have it. It's from a reliable source, not a rumor. Until someone shows evideicne that it's a rumor, I'll believe it. I'm not going to let anyone bring me down after this good news. ;)

If you don't mind me asking, what were the details they sent you Atoman?

It would seem that this is the original except for the fact that they say 51 episodes. 51 would indicate edited since 52 is how much episodes there were originally.

Where do you see 51 episodes? I see 52 in the first link. Your second link isn't working, so I can't tell! ;)

At this price, I'd sooooooooo buy it if it were really the original Japanese 52 episodes, but I'll believe it when I'll see it! B)

Oh yeah, and there is still the French version that I'm wondering if I should buy it from France or not. Come on, I want it to be available in Canada!

Here's the 2nd link. The 51 episodes mention could simply be a mistake.

What does "Format - Hybrid" mean? I wonder how close it is going to be to the Madman version.

If I remember correctly hybrid means the material is both dubbed and subbed.

Yup, from the right stuf site

....You might also see (Hyb) which means that both the subtitled and dubbed versions are available on the same DVD.

Thanks.

Hey, looks like there is a chance we could get it in Canada?! :wahah: (See news here) It'd be cool to avoid the import duty. I'm still traumatized by my Australian import!
