Astro Boy (2003 series) on DVD

Postby Kirben » 18 years ago

Is there any legal way to buy the original Japanese versions of episode 25 onwards, with English subtitles on DVD?

I imported the two DVD sets released in Korea, but they only go as far as episode 24 and doesn't look like any more will ever be released over there.

I ended up buying the Australian release of episodes 25 onwards on DVD, but I can't stand to watch the English dub anymore, after seeing original Japanese version of earlier episodes. Due to the music been replaced, frequent scripts changes, poor choice of voice actors (Especially Astro) and scenes removed.

I was considering importing DVDs from Japan, if there are no other options. But are there any subtitle scripts available for episodes 25 onwards? as I don't understand Japanese.

Welcome to the forum Kirben. I agree with you about the poor quality of the English dubbed series. However, as far as I know, there is no official version offering subbed Japanese. In fact, the two sets you mentioned earlier are news to me. Please provide a link to them. In regards to the latter part of the English -dubbed version, while I agree that there are liberties taken by the English translators, I do not think that the differences are as bad as in the earlier episodes. :astro:

There are images of the boxed sets of the Korean DVDs releases at the Ministry of Science web site. And they have been mentioned on these forums in the past.

I imported the Korean DVDs releases through the YesAsia web site, but they are no longer on offer, through that shop.

The few episodes I have watched of season 2 of the series, didn't seem any better. In particular the usual dialog changes to give main characters (Astro, Blue Knight) more of an attitude, the dialog which makes no sense (with scenes currently been shown), and the added dialog (where there was originally none).

Even in bootleg they don't exist. Anyway, who would like to risk fattening the maffia ;)

The bootleg DVDs have English subs, but they're very bad translations. The grammer is terrible, there's spelling and punctuation errors everywhere, and none of the names are correct. Here's the start of episode 28, for example.

ENGLISH DUB - Hydra-Jacked

Newsreader: No one knows where he came from, no one even knows who built him. But we do know one thing: this mysterious robot always shows up to help other robots.
O'Shay: The Blue Knight.
Yuko: He helped rescue the people on that airbus.
O'Shay: And saved my life too.
Astro: Yeah, and the Blue Knight thinks humans want to destroy robots, so he's always fighting to protect them when they're in trouble.
O'Shay: Unfortunately, some humans still do want to destroy robots. As more people realise the immense value that robots provide, like they do on Hydra, things will start to change.

BOOTLEG SUB - The danger of the universe factory

He came on the locale
then he saved the robot
The secret robot, Rider Chin
his true face hasn't been found
Rider Chin. . .
That robot of Mineba accident?
He's my benefactor
Rider Chin hopes that
the robot won't be teased by human beings
That's OK
Really? But many people hate robot
But many people have trusted robot little by little recently

Rider Chin?
I can provide the bootleg subs for episodes 27 onwards if you think you can make use of them.

As I mentioned in original message, I was after a legal release. I would never buy bootlegs, as money doesn't go back into the anime industry and it usually ends up supporting crime.

The subtitles of those bootlegs DVD releases are really shocking, that isn't understandable at all. I was hoping someone might have imported Japan DVD releases in past, produced accurate subtitle scripts and made the subtitle scripts publicly available for other people.

Were any fansubs of season 2 produced? seems unlikely, since the series was licensed so quickly by Sony. But I noticed groups often continue to translate series that got ruined by the English dubs.
