I've been working on an idea to write the fanfiction we're severely lacking, that is to say, a good fanfic with a storyline that takes the Astroboy world and runs with it.
So I've taken it upon myself to write a fic that I can read.
I've combined my two favorite robot heroes, Astroboy and Megaman Classic, and a few other anime robots that might fit, (like the movie Metropolis) and tossed them into a struggle for the survival of robots on earth. I posted it here as most of the robots are Astroboy characters and our little boot wearing hero has the lead role. Take a look at the first chapter...

Chapter 1: Godspeed Mighty Atom
A small group of robots ran towards a rocket, pursued by a rioting mob armed with guns and blunt objects. Carried by her mother, Uran could peer over her shoulder to the humans behind them, an angry army of those the robots had once served and obeyed
No longer would robots obey their creators. There were those in human society that opposed the robots but until recently they were a minority. Robots were safe, governed by the Three Laws of Robotics, A robot can not harm a human, a robot must obey human except when it disobeys the first law and the third law, a robot has the right to protect themselves except when it conflicts with the first two laws
but then came the Tema Incident
Tema was designed to be the perfect robot. She was built using the technology pioneered with the creation of Astroboys Electronic Human Brain Pattern Simulator and Dr Lights invention of ultra-lifelike skintonning. She was human entirely from the outside
but still a robot. She went rouge and tried to blow up the world and mankind had had enough of robots.
A massacre began. Robots were arrested and executed in the streets, their energy was removed and they were scrapped. The world quickly forgot those heroic robots who helped them and saw all androids as evil. By the time the three laws were reprogrammed so that Law 1 became law three and law three became law two and law two became law 1, 70% of the robot population was wiped out.
The call went out to all robots The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. It was decided that the best of the robot population, the custom built models, the best and brightest would flee the earth, as many as they could
and the rest would fight until they got to safety. Astros family was the first selected. Astro and Uran were the most advanced robots left and their parents, despite being in inferior standard bodies, had the advanced minds that only a few robots shared. The next chosen was a pair of American child robots that improved Dr Boytons design. Made by the renowned roboticist Dr. Light, Roll and Rock were perfectly human-like. Unlike Astro and Uran, their skin felt like real flesh, not slightly hard and rubbery like Astros their movement matched that of real children as well. Their hair could grow and could be cut. Rock had been modified into a fighting robot long before Astro had been born and the famous Megaman was one of Americas great heroes before the war. Accompanying the robots were the greatest robot creators in the world, Dr Astor Boyton, Dr Elephan, Robot rights activist Albert Duncan Professor Rindolf (who had settled his grudge with Astroboy) and Dr Light, creator of Rock and Roll. In addition were 10,000 robots selected randomly through a lottery.
The VIP robots ran down a corridor towards the airlock of the rocket followed closely by the mob. Lasers, Plasma fire and unreliable Tesla and Magbolts, flew past, narrowly missing the robots. Astros mother, weighed down by her daughters weight began to slip behind, the mob was about to engulf her and Uran when a wall to the right suddenly collapsed and three robots leapt out, two ten year old boys, one in a blue jumpsuit and the other in red boots and little else. It was Astro and Megaman. Megaman pointed his Buster at the mob and the end glowed with charging plasma. Step back or Ill fire! He shouted. One of the crowd fired at him and the third robot, a red dog jumped in front and took the Magblot. Jump writhed in pain and died. You killed my dog! he shouted in anger and sorrow. Astro picked up his mother and sister and ran to the ship, his mother nursing the wound in her leg and holding in the leaking coolant dripping like think green blood. Megaman stepped in front of the crowd Anyone wanna try me? he said, slightly pleased at having a chance to finally repay mankind for mistreating him and his sister. The crowd in their mod mentality tried to storm him. Oh well. He fired his Buster at them and turned them into a pile of smoldering ash the sight of which sickened him. The three laws still applied in their original state a bit and he didnt want to kill humans. His creator came out of the hole he and Astro had blasted into the wall. He had some business to take care of before leaving earth and he had to hide an experiment deep underground.
Megaman and Dr. Light rushed for the airlock and leapt in just as it was closing and the countdown began.

The remaining robots on earth had gathered outside the ministry of science in Tokyo. In the interests of the continued existence of their kind they were to fight the army attempting to destroy the ship as it left and all the robots on board. Once safely inside Uran ran the porthole and looked out. A blonde robot, the same height as her big brother, joined her at looking out. Uran wanted to see her last glimpse of earth. Look Roll! she said to the blonde girl the army!

The robots outside surrounded the rocket and swarmed onto the roof of the Ministry. The mob and the robots were losing equal numbers. Many of the robots refused to fight and were simple cannon fodder. Roll was glad they were far off because she wouldve hated to see it up close Bass and Protoman are down there! she thought to herself. She knew that even if the humans didnt kill them right away she would never see any of her friends again.

A small obsolete blonde nursing unit named Becky who had won the lottery immediately tended Astros mother. Becky had trained herself as a mechanic. No good being a human medic out here. There were only 4 humans aboard
She needed to increase her skills.

The civilians were dispersed as the army came in, driving tanks and fighter planes. Those robots who could fly grabbed a weapon and leapt into the air. Look its Zeus! Uran cried, pleased to see the robot she had a crush on for one last time. He engaged a fighter plane and fired from his chest, destroying it, then a second. Finally one managed to hit his delicate dragonfly wings and he fell to the ground.

And here comes Astro!
Astro had left the rocket to help outside and Rock was on his back, adding his Buster to Astros lasers and machine gun. The fighter planes turned to intercept but Megaman leapt from Astros back and tore out the fuel cables of a plane. He knocked on the cockpit hatch. Youd better eject. I just cut your fuel-line! He said. One plane shot a missile at the ship and Astro tossed it back, destroying the plane. Then with his lasers he tore off the nose of another jet, narrowly missing the ejection system of the pilots seat. Sorry I had to do that! he shout to the pilot as he activated his parachute. The pilot got out a pistol and fired at him but the laser bounced off so Astro flew down and twisted the gun into a pretzel. You might hurt somebody with that! Megaman jumped from plane to plane (blowing up each one) and grabbed onto Astro before he fell..

Becky finished tending Astros mother and quickly strapped herself in Astros mother pulled at the two girl robots at the window and forced them to their seats.

They buckled themselves in tight. The humans were put into stasis. The g-forces were not survivable by humans.

The robots on the ground overwhelmed the tanks. One robot, the hugest ever seen was stomping them flat. Gigantor had waited years for the chance to do that!

Astro and Rock jumped back aboard the rocket and closed the airlock. They threw themselves flat to minimize the damage the gravity might add to them.

Ignition!
The rockets boosters fired and the robots cheered. As soon as it was in orbit the rockets shields would go up and it would be invulnerable. There was nothing the humans could do to stop them now
They would die but robots as a species would live on. They were dying for a cause.
The robots stopped fighting, turned to the rocket and saluted. They all took out their energy cassettes and powered down their systems. One robot and his band at the top of the Ministry of Science played a stirring anthem to the ship on his electric guitar, against the backdrop of the robot flag a gear of a field of blue. Oh Robotkind, oh Robotkind Our hearts are steel but they still beat. They beat with love and compassion. For robots and humanity.
The robot band took out their cassettes one by one until the singer was all that was left, playing his guitar.
He was the only one who saw the flash from the side of the rocket. Only he saw the bomb fall from the rockets hull. Only he saw the it hit the ground and make a crater in the concrete. It was robotkinds coup-de-grace. A mercy killing from those who left to those on the ground. A quick death. An electro-magnetic blast, not dangerous to humans but lethal to computers.
And with it the last robot on earth had his hard-drive immediately wiped. As his life faded he whispered Godspeed Mighty Atom.

Fanfiction: Robotkind (warning contains minor violence.)
I find this very much opposed to Atom's nature. He would never sanction the killing of humans,and just as he stood between the Blue Knight and the humans he intended to kill, so too would he rather be destroyed by Rock's blast than to allow him to kill humans. 
Have you ever read Astroboy manga vol 19? It has the comic version of the Blue Knight. I think this clearly expresses Atom's attitude. Even though Count Burg was total scum, & deserved death for the trouble he caused both humans and robots, Atom defended him with his own life.
Other than that, I think your story is very good (as though I were one to know).

I know I wasn't true to Astro's personality a lot in this chapter. I was more influenced by the film/manga of Metropolis (whose events I used as a catalyst for the story) so the feel is more of one or survival then agression towards humands. I tried to make Astro not kill anybody, in fact the only character that does is Rock/Megaman who also wouldn't kill humans (hence why after that he refuses to.) In the next chapter We'll get closer to the human-loving quasi-pacifict Astro is supposed to be when robotkind plans it's next step. If anybody has some robots they would like to have added to the story as cameos or character roles just ask me. I've already had a request to add Sumomo (Plum) from Chobits. Don't ask for any Astroboy characters as most of the leading roles I'm already writing into the story... And please no mention of the cast of Metropolis... I wanna have them as wildcards for later!

You know who'd be a better Niki replacement in my fic? Roll. They do look similar, red dress and blonde hair, until Dr Rindolf makes another Niki anyway!
Then there'll be a robot catfight. It won't be pretty... We'll have to leave the two on an abandoned asteroid where they can't hurt anyone.
