Good question. I guess now it would have to be Nicolas Cage. Pretty much everyone knows who he is, even in Japan.

Yoshiyuki Tomino, creator of Mobile Suit Gundam, directed more episodes of Astro Boy than anyone else. Considering the global popularity of Gundam in anime circles, he could be considered for a spot on a list.
