Oh right, Hideaki Anno's relation to the Aum Shinrikyo...there's so many things in Evangelion that reference the cult's "preaching" that it makes the whole show a lot more disturbing.

I never liked Eva, but knowing this fact (which is new to me), I have to agree both with Fauna and Fafner: it's very, very disturbing, but it's important to judge the work, not the artist (look at Elia Kazan, for example).

Well, I guess I'm the only fan of Dragon Ball here and on Tezuka in English. Vive la resistance! :d evil:

S¡gned: A fan of Dragon Ball since 1992

I also like Dragon Ball; though I have yet to finish the 1st (non-Z) part. I will check youtube again sometime to see if the next chapter is available. :p

I did not know about the connection between that cult & Evangelion, though.

If there are links between Evangelion and such a suspicious cult, I can only agree that it shouldn't be in the list.
The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.

Here, the only one I can think of is how Gendo (or was it Seele...? I should probably verify this) was planning to use the Third Impact as a way to start humanity over again, but this time, them remaining as the "first ones" of humanity. Aum Shinrikyo planned to kill off all of humanity so they could be the only ones left to restart from. I don't think Anno is involved with the cult anymore, and most of Evangelion seems like his personal exorcism.

Number 25: since the artist was a devout member of the Aum cult which gased the Tokyo subway system in 1995. Evangelion was inspired by Aum teachings.

Well, it's less about the artist and more about the series on it's own and
whether you like the series or not, it has made a big impact on Anime

I gotta disagree. I'm not a huge fan of Dragonball, (though I did really like the Non-Z series) Dragonball deserves it's place simply because it helped break the anime barrier America had at the time. It's what helped lots and lots of people get into Anime. (In fact, the original Dragonball and Sailor Moon were the very first animes I ever sat down, watched, and decided "hmmm, Anime isn't so bad." Though I probably would've put it at Number 2 myself and Astro at Number 1. (and Sailor Moon at Number 3) That said, I was just grateful our little Atom made the list at all.

Son Goku is a character in a very old story Journey to the West, which has been retold in various anime by various artists. Though I do not really think that Dragon Ball actually tells this story; if it does, I have yet to see that part.

Two thinks here:

Toriyama and Tezuka: Apparently, Akira Toriyama and Tezuka-sama shared a huge mutual admiration. Tori-san more than probably created the android of his other masterpiece - Dr. Slump -, Arale, as a parody of Astro, and Astro is refered in several jokes. On the other hand, Tezuka-sama, according to Frederick Schodt on "The Astroboy Essays", loved Dr. Slump, and he wanted to create the 1982 Astroboy series as an humorous auto-parody in the same vein as Toriyama's. This can be seen in the couple of chapters he directed there, and on the new manga chapters he made for the First-Grade Student Magazine. However, the idea of his production company prevailed upon his own, and it had that dramatic tone we all know and love (or not :p ).

Dragon Ball & Jouney to the East: According to a book about Dragon Ball, Toriyama first wanted to make the story following (VERY freely) the events of Journey to the East. Being this the case, intended to end it when Goku loses the 1st (or 22nd) Budokai to his own master Roshi, disguised as old fighter Jackie Chun, as Journey to the East ended with Sun Wukong discovering there was a a stronger being (Buddha, master to all) than the strongest being (Sun Wukong). However, the sucess of the manga made him change his mind and decided to take on a great parody of popular cinema: The Red Ribbon Army saga (with references to The Terminator, Game of Death and other martial arts films, The Spy Who Loved Me, the Universal Monsters, the WWII movies, the pirate movies and a long etcetera). Hope this helps
