NOW! Comics Astro Boy Bonus Story

Postby Fauna » 15 years ago

In Speed Racer #17, there was a six-page insert story witha few of the Astro Boy characters, in Brian Thomas's style. Here's the scans.

Most importantly, this was published at the same time as the sixteenth Astro Boy issue, and in the same month that Tezuka died. The story involves Astro getting a test to see if he can go crazy, and a guy stealing I.Q. Plenty's new weapons so he can shoot some kids. Is it good? No.

But one of the members here bought the issue for me, and I'm very happy they did so; there'll be complete scans and reviews from this point on, and it's the nicest thing someone on the internet has done for me.

Also, here's the original size of that photo-manipulation at the bottom of the page above...

That's a great find. But I agree....it looks bad. How a professional artist can mess up an iconic character like Astro is beyond me. I don't hold with artists who choose to interpret a classic character according to their personal style. That strikes me as arrogant. I have the same beef with singers who mess up a good song to make it fit their style. I've heard some really bad versions of Disney songs that way (shudder), via whiny-voiced gurl singers and their screeching renditions. :sick: Anyway - sorry for the digression - thanks for the scans. They're...educational, if nothing else. Oh how I'd love a GOOD new Astro comic that respects Tezuka's character designs, or even better, one that uses the Imagi designs from the movie. That would rock!!!!

It's odd i actually prefer this version than the others that NOW COMICS have done on Astro Boy. The drawings looked better too. But to be honest, the mangas are way way way way way WAY better. the 2003 manga being my favourite *_*

Though plotwise...eeer, i found this kinda odd. Sure, happy Astro at the end was cute but being happy that he could flip at any moment isn't really sweet o_O;

"Doctor! I might go crazy and kill everyone any day now ISN'T THAT GREAT!?"

"Yes is it Astro, that's my boy-DROP THE CHAINSAW THIS INSTANT!"

"But doctooooor!"

Now Comics isn't still around NOW is it? =_=;

No, they've gone bankrupt years ago. But the former company manager Tony Caputo still owns the publishing rights to a few of their creations, none of them Astro Boy.

And yes, I like Brian Thomas's artwork much better! He could make Tenma/Boynton look great... :wub: But he wasn't ever good at story writing. Especially in this one. The last thing they can do with Astro is make it possible for him to go crazy?
