Oh, the store I went to had the DVD all right...but only for RENT. Not for SALE.
Can you freaking believe it?????
So I bought a copy from Borders. Yeesh!
Anyway, one thing I found out while playing the DVD is what an antique my TV is. It's got a built-in DVD/VCR player (that should tell you something about its age). And the movie froze in some spots, but it's not its fault. I played it in my computer and it was just fine. Guess I need a new TV...
Anyway - what a great film. Just amazing. And beautiful. And heartbreaking *sniff*.
The extras were cool, but I do wish Imagi had gone into more depth about Astro's history, and his creator Osamu Tezuka. All it had in that regard was the image gallery. Oh well. My fave extras were the voice cast and the part about building Metro City. Very nicely done.
As for the new animated sequences...eh! They were okay. I can see why they were excised from the film...didn't really add anything. In fact, when it comes to editing, the Imagi gang showed better judgement than did the crew behind The Princess and the Frog. The Junkyard Pirates reminded me a lot of those dimwitted frog hunters in the Princess film - which, like the Pirates, weren't all that funny and added little to the story. Kudos to Imagi's artisans for knowing what to focus on - Astro's struggles - and what to discard. Disney could take lessons from them!

But oh, that DVD made me want more of Imagi's Astro! Maybe if I wish upon a star....think that'll work?
