That’s odd the aspect ratio on the New Astro Boy disc says: 4:3 I always assumed from the trailer I downloaded that it was to be widescreen, can anyone confirm whether the broadcast in Japan is widescreen or not?

DrFrag I’m not sure why you are so suspicious, the set although flawed is very professional, I’m not sure about this email address you speak of, it appears nowhere on the discs or box that I have. As for the price, the Japanese ones are way overpriced if you ask me, maybe it’s because of the “[Initial pressing only limited release]” or because every thing is more expensive in Japan (I hear a watermelon costs $60! ;) but still each disc work out at about $78AUD compare this to the HongKong set $17AUD that is more in line with single DVD prices and box sets as well.

I actually had the same set in two distinctly different packages, with different scenes on the front. This occurred because after I had bid on the one set, I found the other. Only one of the two said box 1, so, I figured that the other was box 2, because it had a different picture. So, I ended up with two of the same thing. One of which, I have just sold via eBay.

The one I kept says DVD-BOX 1 ASTRO BOY on the front with Atom flying from the upper right to the lower left corner. On the back MIGHTY ATOM, and stuff about dialogue and regions, 1-26 episodes. On this one, I could only select subtitles via remote control features or PC software. there was no menu selection for it.

The other was

Which did have menu selection for subtitles (I think), but because one disc was scratched, I was able to exchange for a new set. Good thing too, because This set arrived first, and I opened it, while the other set was used. :o

hm. I have never had much luck using emule but since eps are on there, I'll have to try again. I normally sit in queues for days and end up just cancelling.

Looks like I'll kick the can one more time. Thanks hybrid.

Anyone know if the available tapes of the 60s series in English are coming out on DVD?

There is a petition to put an Astroboy English dubbed series on DVD; but, I am not sure which one. While the thing speaks of the 193 episodes of the B&W series, it petitions Manga Entertainment, rather than The Right Stuf. :huh:Petion  So, because it addresses Manga Entertainment, one might conclude it is for the color remake.

As regards the B&W cartoon. I know of only 36 episodes available in any medium, and those are through TRSI.TRSI: search for "astro boy". As I understand it, because Mushi was bankrupt when NBC was going to return all the stuff, Mushi instructed it to destroy it, and send a certificate of destruction instead.

Shawne Kleckner of TRSI remembered the series, and went about collecting copies of the English dubbed version from wherever he could find them, and restored them to VHS. Of the 18 tapes that I have, some have much higher picture quality than others.

The Pirate Anime FAQ
Bootleg FAQ

An extract:

Anime bootlegs will invariably be subtitled in both English and Chinese. They might also include an English dub. But the important thing to notice are the English and Chinese subtitles in conjunction. No legitimate company releases anime with both Chinese and English subtitles; not one. This is one of the surest signs of a bootleg.

The e-mail address I mentioned appears printed on the discs themselves, circling the edge. The full text, including typos, reads:
