If it gets shown on the ABC in Australia, it should be the fullest dub available. The fullest dub might not be the whole thing, but they won't cut anything for ads or scheduling. If there are scenes that were never dubbed in the first place, then of course we won't be getting them. The 60s series had violence edited out during the dubbing stage for example, so no one got a perfect dub.

I've been reading about the crackdown in the USA on indecency on television and I find it a little strange and funny. In Australia, everything is given a rating and proceded by a warning like this:

The big rule is they're not allowed to use the F-word before 9:30pm. Otherwise, pretty much anything goes. People are cool with it, parents know what to let their kids watch, and society hasn't crumbled around us. ;)

Channel 10 would chop it up though, simply to cram in more ads.

Now all I need to do is to get a HDTV box and a DVD RECORDER before it airs.. Does anyone actually know when this is to start?? I need to start saving PRONTO!!

I had the same thought Danny! I'd give it a couple of months. But to have a HD digital receiver and simply stream the MPEG2 broadcast from ABC Digital would be cool. B) Er, not that I'm not going to buy it.

Actually, this is not 'quite' true. The f-word is allowed to appear ANY time of the day outside sceduled childrens broadcasting slots.

THe strange part is, its only allowed to appear before 9:30pm if it is 'integral for plot and texture'. (paraphrasing).

This means, if they decide to play BEVERLY HILLS COP for the midday movie, it will be heavily edited, as most of the 'foul language' in that film has nothing to do with the story or plot etc. However if they play THE BROTHERS McMULLIN..

For those also overseas, it may be of interest to note that australia has no true limitations on 'plot sensitive' nutity. outside kiddies hours. I still get people from overseas telling us such things as "how did CHANCES ever get past the censors" etc.

Even more interesting for any american friends would be that the day time soaps from there we get aired ) days of our lives, young and the restless, bold and the beautiful etc) actually have EXTRA CONTENT filmed specifically for countries outside America with less strict censorship laws for TV.

WE here in australia get to see the goods when Brooke and Ridge to the nasty. That fella that plays John Black in DOOL is apparently quite the eye candy for his 'non-american' viewers. At least thats what the ladies at the water cooler tell me.

Personally, I can't vouch for any of it. I stopped watching daytime soap when General Hospital and Another World were removed from the schedule, and I stopped watching DOOL back when they killed off Eugene and Caliapy. Jon De Lancie is a legend :)

I have only been enthusiastic about one soap, and that was Soap. True, it was not a soap opera in the conventional sense, and that it why I and many others liked it.

in the Weekend Australian's TV Guide it's got a short review of Astro on Cartoon Network. But note the last sentence about free-to-air!

"With Japanese animation so incredibly popular, it was about time for its most famous character to get a makeover. The new Astro Boy is slickly animated - more Neon Genesis Evangelion than Pokemon - and should introduce the little robot boy to a whole new generation. If you haven't got pay TV, the series will also be airing on ABC next month."

I do not understand how the thing can run on two competing channel at the same time. The stations pay for the right to broadcast or cablecast the shows, and sell advertising etc. How it can run on a public and privite station simultaneously is beyond me. :o

I've just picked up a copy of Rollercoaster magazine (after seeing Astroboy on the cover, of course! ;) . It's the official kids' magazine for the ABC. They have two pages on Astroboy plus a very mini poster. At the bottom of the page is this:

Watch Astro Boy at 4:30pm every Thursday on ABC Kids TV

(it's okay, it hasn't started yet! ;)

I just had a horrible thought..

Dr Frag, I need you to go back to that issue of rollercoaster and check something for me and every other Australian here.

Does it SPECIFICALLY say this is the NEW astroboy series?? They may be riding the new series on the other channel (and payTV) and simply re-airing the 80's series again.

Please.. we need to know.
