Don't be so cheap, Doc! After what you did to her brother's hairstyle in that other thread, you should be able to edit that pic and make her costume black, caped, and masked. Plus, put her on a toy horse, or perhaps a merry-go-round.

It seems that there are no consonants adjacent to other consonants, unless they constitute one phenome. There are few cases of syllables ending in consonants. 'n' is the sole exception. It alone is a free-standing consonant. All others are grouped with vowels. Thus, uranu is often pronounced as uran. Also, it seems that in words endind in 'u' the 'u' is often silent. desu means "there is" or 'exists', and its 'u' is silent. [/b]

Atom is Atomu because thats what the Japanese language allows in terms of spelling. If written with the Japanese katakana character set (katakana is used for foriegn borrowed words, to emphase and by children i think) then the characters allow for Atomu ( A - TO - MU there is no 'added vowel' however if written in Romanji (English letters) then it will be written as Atom. I have a few Japanese pieces of merchandise and you will never see 'Atomu' written in Romanji.

Katakana ends up phonetically sounding out words so they fit with the Japanese language.eg Komikkusu sound it out and you can tell what English word it is right?

I choose to call the little girl robot by the proper English word, [b]Uranium because it has a clear meaning to English speakers, just as Atom has meaning that Atomu lacks. [/b]

Atomu = Atom, it is just the Japanese way of writing the word in their own language. I haven't researched if Uran is Uranium in Japanese but if it is then the shortening can be explained by the fact Uran is a borrowed word. The English language also borrows words from other languages and changes their spelling so i do not see how this is unusual. If you call Uran by her English equivlant then i wonder by you do not call Ochanomizu by his Ocha = tea, mizu = water, no = particle of association usually "of" or " 's "

It's "comics", but I can only see it in hindsight after looking it up.

I believe the English-Japanese breakdown of the word is:

c o = ko (the letter c is phonetically either k or s, so it doesn't appear in romanji)
m i = mi
k (the first k is written to force a slight pause, I think the katakana has a dash there)
c = ku (c becomes k, k must be followed by an a, i, e, u or o)
s = su (s must be followed by an a, u, e or o. Where you would expect si in katakana is the sound shi)

I know this is a simplification but please be gentle I'm just a beginner!

Babelfish tells me "comics" is ƒRƒ~ƒbƒN, which looks like komitsuku to me. What's the deal with that?

This is a table of the basic sounds you get to work with. All vowels are short, unless followed by a hyphen. So let's say you want to pronounce Atom.

A =
TO =
M ... M ... there's no M! There's MA, MI, MU, ME, MO. Let's go with MU =

So it appears as , which gets prounced as Atomu. But it's how they write the foreign word Atom.


See? They've used a different font though. The word Tetsuwan is written in Kanji, symbols borrowed from the Chinese alphabet. Don't ask me about this!

Also, katakana is only used for foreign words, company names, swear words, etc. Normally they use hiragana (which is basically the same but all different symbols) and kanji (the complicated Chinese one with thousands of symbols).
