So...assuming that the Madman box of 60's episodes happens, I wonder if that means they will only release the ones that were dubbed...?
Bombs vs. bombs, missiles vs. missiles and now a new super weapon to throw upon us all!

Thank you Strange Wings.

I've seen those fuel taking scenes before and it's a wonder they got passed the censors.
I haven't seen the episode where someone is pulling on his briefs though  , that may have been censored. What episode is it from, and what the hell are those things pulling on Astro, elephant trunks? I don't think it was dubbed, because I've seen all the dubbed ones, available on tape anyway. Eventually I'll see it in the raw Japanese when I've seen all 193 episodes.

Nooooo! :o :(

Here's another episode that was banned in States. It's the last one, episode 193, in which Astro sacrafices himself, by flying a bomb into the sun, to save the world. :( Hmm, don't know why he didn't just through it into the sun instead.

Well I can see why it was banned in the States. Evan in Japan nobody liked it and Tezuka was flooded with letters of protest.
So if you see this episode(I know I'll watch it just once)and your heart breaks, read the manga sequal in vol. 22 and you'll feel better. Yay, he's saved. :)

I can understand why they didn't dub that one. I mean, nothing pisses me off more in a show than when the main character gets killed off. I mean, we've been following this character for for a certain amount of time and eve groing to love this character only to see them die in the end? WTF?

I think that NBC had already decided to cancel the show. This was for several reasons, only one of which was content. I think FL said that with the increasing popularity of color TV, any show that lacked it was considered too old. The execs wanted new things, of course new would be "In Color." When I was a kid, some shows used that line. Ex:
Title:
"Spiderman"
Next line:
"in color"

Color was so new, that shows used that line to grab popularity. Even if the show stank, its being in color was so unusual, even if few TVs were coror sets, that in itself was a novelty & therefore worth checking out.

Wow, thanks for all the responses to my thread. I agree with you 100% about the last 60's ep. Dragonrider, WTF  I'm having second thoughts about watching it. I will buy the complete Japanese series, but I may never watch the last one. I'm a very sensitive person, and I can't stand to see someone I love be abused or killed. I don't evan want to watch the first three 80's eps. again, meaning Japanese eps. 1 and 2, plus the real episode 3: The Robot Circus. My heart broke several times, especially when Astro was whipped by Hamegg, in fact I was sick. :( The manga where Hamegg whipped Astro was evan worse. :o  I'll never forgive Hamegg for such child abuse. Poor Astro. I did feel better watching the 60's eps. where Astro beats Hamegg up. You go go go Astro, kick his a.... ;) Astro: "Take that and this, (fires his butt-guns)ratatatatatatata."

On a lighter note, Jeffbert, I noticed you said you were a kid when color tv came in, just like me, born in '67, I too remember the spiderman cartoons, but unfortunately I was deprived of the black 'n' white Astro, because as you say it wasn't color. Ohh well, at least I saw Tezuka's Space Giants(Ambassador Magma), of course it was in color. I only discovered Astro in 2002 I think, thanks to the Dark Horse manga and I feel like I've known him all my life. He awakened my childhood spirit. Thanks Astro and Tezuka.

Atoman, when you get the full Japanese series, can you let us know which episodes are missing? There were about half a dozen that were lost and no known copies exist today. These are my notes, but I'm not sure if they're accurate:

34. Midoro Marsh - lost? audio recovered
125. Find the Bacteria - lost?
127. The Experimental Robot - lost
139. Astro Boy Stolen - lost, audio recovered
145. Atom in the Deep Sear - lost?
148. Robio and Robiet - lost?
152. The Robot Bombs - lost?

I also have these notes:
56. Earth Defense Army - colourised
68. Rebellion of the Dinosaur People - reversed with #69
69. Secret of the Clock Tower - reversed with #68

Watch it unless it's too hard for you.

Look at it this way. Astro dying only makes all his other couragous feats more admirable. If there is no sense of fear of Astro dying at all than we lose some emotional attachment to what he's doing. If there is no fear of him passing away we lose our fear that Astro might get hurt whenever he is doing a heroic deed. He becomes too invincable and therefore not as relatable. When we see someone truly struggle we become more invested in that charactor.

I do not know about dying, but I remember the one in which he thought he would be marooned on the moon & never see his family again. He was very upset about this. I found this touching, be as I wondered why he would assume he would be there forever, somewhat funny. After all, he was in a moon base placed there by humans. As such, the moon was not beyond humaniy's reach. Why assume they would abandon one of earth's greatest heroe?

If I do watch it, it'll be only once and I'll definately read the manga sequal later in vol. 22. True, suffering does make Astro a more sympathetic character, and self-sacrafice is admirable, but I do not require Astro to do this for me to like him. It's enough that he's a hero and he makes me laugh, that's all I ask of him. Someone on this forum once said that we like Astro because he's cute and makes us laugh, that's so true. Someone else said that Astro was a nice contrast to the horrible news about the Vietnam war.

Since 9/11 the world has gone to hell, so now more than ever we need laughter, not more death. Every night on the news the death toll rises from the Tsunami, not to mention in Iraq and Afganastan. Astro is good medicine. He's like an angel or tomodachi in the midst of a nightmare. I may watch the last 60's ep., but don't ask me to like it.
I need laughter.

Hi Dr. Frag,

I think all the eps. you mentioned are no longer lost. Evan Midoro Marsh is completely restored in Japanese, I have it. I also have the full color(not colorized)Earth Defense Army, which was used along with two other eps.(Robot Spaceship, and the Bem episode)for the 1964 Astro movie. The 60's Astro is beautiful in color, to bad they didn't make the whole series that way. Here's a link:

Just click on all the dvd box sets and that should answer all your questions. ;)

Hi Dr. Frag,
Some are lost, but have been recreated for dvd.

125 is still lost visually, but they recreated it for dvd using storyboards and still photos with the soundtrack.

123 was totaly remade for dvd.
Hmm, wonder if it's in b'n'w or color?

and yes 68 and 69 were said to have originally been shown out of order, but may have been corrected for the dvd.

Man, Tezuka Prod. spared no expense to complete the series for dvd.
