Notes : Higeoyagi was translated as Daddy Mustache in Manga's subtitles; Shibugaki is actually the last name of this character (his mother is called Mrs. Shibugaki, his father's museum is the "Shibugaki meuseum"). Guillaume is French for William. "Labrosse" means "the brush".
I haven't seen the original Japanese episode and didn't notice any difference between Manga Entertainment's version and the US version.
CAN/French -
Astro isn't thrown down by Alvin.
Alvin doesn't look like he's going to hit Kenneth and doesn't hold him by his clothes either. Basically, Kenneth appears very suddenly between Astro and Alvin because Alvin doesn't threaten Astro.
According to Alvin, Astro shouldn't have had the right to vote because he was new and didn't know anybody.
Astro doesn't visit the science lab with his friends; the toilet scene was flushed, and the children don't play soccer (or football!
) either.
Alvin's mother thinks a new student shouldn't vote, but mostly she thinks Astro shouldn't vote because he has no parents (!
.
As Astro is leaving the schoolyard, Alvin's mother's "he has no parents!" echoes in his head.
We don't get to see Alvin's mother and Daddy Walrus screaming at each others head to head like this :
We see the rescue robots heading towards the magnetic field, but we don't see them reach it and being destroyed. Daddy Walrus just says that the magnetic field is too powerful.
The magnetic field explosion was cut; after Astro put the coaster back on the tracks, we go straight to the children getting out of the coaster. Therefore we don't get to see Astro falling down and then standing up.
As Astro is looking at the parents and children, "he doesn't have parents" echoes again in his head.
In the Japanese and US versions, Walrus and Elefun talk about creating parents for Astro; but, oddly, after all this talk about Astro not having parents, in the French version, they ask each other "guess who's going to be the next class president?".
This is so cute that it almost makes up for everything that is missing: Mindy asks Astro if she can kiss him!
An embarrassed Astro replies "Well...". At the end of his summary, after the episode, he says he got a kiss from Mindy!
This episode is supposed to show how difficult it is for a robot to get accepted among humans. But by shifting the message from "Go away, robot!" to "You shouldn't vote because you dont have parents", there isn't much of Tezuka's message left in the French/Canadian episode. Or at least, seemingly so: what I remembered as a child wasn't that Astro had been rejected because he had no parents. I had totally forgotten about that ridiculous reason. If you had asked me why Astro had been rejected at school, I would probably have replied that it was because he was a robot!

Somehow Tezuka's message is so strong that it came through the censorship and resulting nonsense!

I'm amazed at how much I liked the series when I realize today how mangled it really was, but it was still strong enough, the proof being that many of us who saw it back then are here to talk about it today!

That said, I have to admit that, looking at the list of what is not in the episode, one almost have to wonder if it wouldn't be easier to write down what is actually left.

As always, if you spot something wrong or missing, please post!

Edit: I figured out Alvin's French last name!
