Oh, no wonder... I hadn't seen those two either.
I'd probably care a little more if I hadn't stopped watching my DVD's after Atlas died/disappeared/whatever in such a ridiculous manner. Almost as if Osamu Tezuka stopped caring.
Yeah, people really do seem to get more attached to the one they started out with, and when you see another one, you start to compare the two in you head, even if you don't mean to. "I remember this story..." or "He's not like that!" or "This isn't right." or "This is way better!".
Personally, I'm pretty young. 17.
So I saw the 2003 first and that's what got me into Astroboy.
I like 2003 best admittedly... Even though there were several episodes I didn't like and sometimes it's too cutesy.
...Wow that was a rant! Really, I like the sound of my own voice to much. X-)

In the 1980 series?
I personally like the last Atlas episode.
Where can I read them?
Also, I heard that there were a few episodes that he oversaw personally. Is that true?
And AF, what do you like about that episode? I don't mean that in a rude way--I honestly want to know what you like about it.
I found it ridiculous.

I've just realized that "AF" was myself!

I just liked to see Astro and Atlas joining forces for once. I know brothers being in conflict and then reunited wasn't exactly a new theme but it was to me back then and it did move me.

I do not see what is so ridiculous... It's science-fiction, after all.
The whole brotherly love thing was cute and touching, yes. I liked that, partially because I have an affinity for such relationships and it was cute to see big mean Atlas and his tiny brother together.
Nn, well if you really wanna know why I don't like it... I'm going to rant now, so this might be a little long.
Essentially, this is my view of the episode. You do not need to read it if you do not wish, and please do not be offended by my words.
It was just how these aliens... Well, there is no sign of them throughout the entire anime, no forewarning at all. They are not the ones that attack in the episode with LT. Ketchup, an episode I actually really liked.
Suddenly they appear, and Ochanomizu and everyone are all "they're called invaders, lol" as if they're freaking commonplace.
Now, these randomly appearing aliens randomly decide to blow up the world. First, though, they decide to destroy all of the space stations, and without any evidence, the humans equally randomly decide to blame Atlas for it.
So then we go through the whole 'brothers' subsection where both get really sentimental and loving. That wasn't bad, in itself--actually, I liked it, but...
Now, our episode draws to a close with Atlas deciding to, instead of fighting the aliens, sacrifice himself by making the Crystal turn into a black hole, someting not only nigh impossible but, like the coming aliens, not mentioned once in the entire anime.
And finally, Astro screams in a voice that is the stuff of nightmares, "Niiiiiiisaaaaaaan", like he's loved him forever, even though they were only bro's for a couple of minutes.
Instantly, BAM! Into the happy end credits music. :d oh:
And so Atlas died(?). The end.
It simply made me sad, to see a great character with such intruiging stories go down like that. He could've at the very least sacrificed himself to protect Astro from a powerful and malevolent robot at the end of some great and consequential battle, although I myself would've preferred to see him live.
At least I was permitted that in the 2003 anime, and for that I am grateful. I actually prefer the '03 Atlas anyways, as can be seen in my choice of user name. X-D
Oh. Would you mind if I call you AF? Because, I can call you "Astro Forever" if you'd like, it's just that I typically assign people nicknames or shortenings of their given or user names. It's endearing, and easier to type.

I have no problem with your opinion and wasn't offended at all.
I hadn't understood the episode the same way you did, however.
I can see what you mean, but it didn't strike me. It wasn't more weird to me than that "Astro Fights Aliens" episode you mentioned or "The Girl from Alsoar" (which I felt was the strangest of those three). Plus, throughout the series, it is clear that humans have a lot more means than we do now, so it makes sense that they could be aware of more phenomena than we do now (not that I think we'll ever actually reach that point, but we'll never manage to create a robot such as Astro so...).
Also, they aren't called invaders right at the beginning but only after they started attacking, so to me they did seem to deserve to be called invaders.
Who else could they blame? Atlas had made it clear he wanted to rule the world and didn't care about humans, and nobody else seems to be as powerful as he is. Makes sense to me (but that is only my opinion, for what it's worth).
Well, it made the scope of the episode so much bigger... Again, I do not have a problem with it. It's science fiction. If I start to take things too realistically, then Astro himlself will not exist anymore and it would kill all the fun.

But Astro had always made it clear that he didn't want to fight Atlas. When Atlas gets frozen in "The Great Meltdown", Astro seems sad. He tries to reason with him a little at the end of "The Robot Vikings". Somehow it really seems that all Astro wants is to protect himself and humans from Atlas, but he never seems to really hate him. It's almost as if deep down, he knew... Either that, or his heart is so pure that he can't really hate anybody.
The one thing that seemed impossible to me is how Astro goes back to his everyday life in the next episodes. The world is destroyed yet somehow just a little time later it shows no sign of it?
I have to say though that in the French episode order, "Atlas Forever" came last, and it really made sense to me that way. I was surprised to find out it wasn't actually the last planned episode originally, and that never quite made sense to me.
BTW, I do not really know why I chose "Astro Forever" as a nickname but I'm pretty sure it must have been an unconscious reference to the episode we are discussing right now.
I'm not really into nicknames in real life (one thing I'll never understand is why it's so usual in English speaking countries to shorten almost everybody's given name, since I almost always prefer the full given name), but since you asked in such a sweet way, I'll gladly make an exception for you.

I had totally forgotten about this topic, actually.
But I'm Daichi so I must...continue...argument!! X-)
Actually, I don't think anyone understands anything the way I do.
Just starting off with a joke. X-P
Actually, they start the episode off attacking so they're always called invaders. I was really pointing at the calm and stupid way Ochanomizu said it, as if, like I said, it was commonplace and insane aliens come and destroy the Earth all the time.
Well, Astro Fights Aliens took place in space, the aliens didn't appear to like the humans colonizing the moon out there. So it makes sense.
How pessimistic, I think we could make a robot who's that human. But that's not the point.
It doesn't really make sense, when you think about it. They don't blame everything else that happens on Atlas, if they did then maybe it would make sense, but since they don't, it doesn't. They would need some kind of evidence or tip or something before absolutely everyone starts hatin' on Atlas.
"Some random guy said Atlas did it. LET'S ALL KILL HIM!!"
Of course Astroboy could exist, you're taking this part all wrong.
They never mentioned anything about it or what it was made of that could enable it to do such. Plus, something like that is way more implausable than a humanoid robot.
Astro could never hate anyone. And you don't quite seem to fully understand any of the things I found wrong with it.
Suddenly they're acting like they have always known that they were brothers, like they grew up together or something!
Possibly the most retarded thing of all.
Like the point of the entire episode was just to off Atlas, and nothing else matters.
The aliens didn't have a motive, the plot and extra characters were pulled out of thin air, and nothing changed after the episode took place.
Oh, and I just remembered something even more retarded!
There's this random guy that's introduced in this episode, I can't remember his name for the life of me. Astro acts like he's known this guy for years and years, even though he's only just been introduced, and what this guy does...
He says Atlas (as we know, actually the aliens) killed his brother in one of the extremely recent space station attacks. Because of this, he's going to get his revenge with a gun that he invented that would destroy the Omega Factor.
1. HOW THE HELL DID HE KNOW ABOUT THE OMEGA FACTOR!?!?
2. How did he complete it so quickly?
3. How does he know what would counter the Omega Factor?
Oh jumping crap, this was the most random, pointless, and badly-written Astroboy episode ever.
