Thanks! And yeah...the flying part was awesome!!!! So exhilarating - you feel like you're flying too! I've got the movie soundtrack and the music for that sequence is thrilling. But then the movie music overall is thrilling. John Ottman did an incredible job with it. My only quibble...I do wish the original theme from the American version of the 1960's Astro Boy show could have been in there somewhere. It's a cool song. So memorable...when I saw the old episodes for the first time on Adult Swim, it's that song that struck me the most.

BTW, the soundtrack CD is awesome. It comes with a little booklet with neat pictures from the movie (including Astro and Cora hugging..awww!!!), and a cool jacket cover (which has the diagram of the Astro Boy robot on it). Plus there are comments by Ottoman and the movie's director, David Bowers. BTW, David is on Twitter! I'm trying to get up the courage to tweet him and tell him how much I loved his movie! *gulp* maybe someday...

Glad to see you're part of the forum, and I agree wholeheartedly with your review! One of the most underrated and best films of the year, and definitely my favorite as well!

The flying/mountain scene is my favorite scene of the movie! The visuals and music come together and it's just beautiful - I've seen the movie twice too and both times I was positively glued to the scene. I was sort of afraid the second time that scene would lose its magic, and if anything, I enjoyed it even more the second time around! You're absolutely right about how it captures the feeling of flight - that's what struck me; you could feel the sheer power of Astro and what it's like to fly like that and realize what you're capable of; it really does feel like you're right along with him.

Also, nice to see some love for Ottman's soundtrack. I can't stop listening to it personally - I think it's greatest score of the year! Unfortunately I was so anxious to start listening to it when I got home from my first viewing of the movie I purchased on iTunes without thinking about the booklet, so yeah - wishing I'd gone the physical CD route now since I usually do that for stuff I really love, but I really appreciate your description of what you get in the booklet - I may still consider picking up a physical copy. ^.^

I think it would be cool to see what the movie is like in Japanese. :D
I loved the movie too!
:astro:

I saw the French version because I live in Quebec, Canada, where most people have French as a first language, including myself. :)

I agree it's better to watch a movie in its original version, so most of the time now I'll watch the English version when it's the movie's original language.

Happy to oblige. Well, the CD shell has the robot schematic on the interior. The booklet isn't very thick, just a few pages. But it's got cool pics from the movie, including one with Astro lying on the table before he's activated (you're seeing him from above), little pics of Tenma and Astro just before Tenma frees him from the handcuffs and tells him to "Fly! Fly!" There's Dr. Elefun with the blue core, and a few pics we've all seen from publicity stills (Astro flying - an unfortunate pic, in my view, because he doesn't look much like Classic Astro there) 2 shots of Astro and Zog, Astro and Cora's gang, Astro fighting in the stadium, Stone and the Red Core robot, Astro bearing the weight of Metro City on his shoulders, the Cora/Astro hug (Trashcan's in the background) and one on the back cover of Astro taking off during the escape from Metro City. Again, a few of the pics are just the standard publicity stills you've maybe already seen, but most of them are cool, and I'm glad to have them. The booklet also has a full-page comment from director/writer David Bowers, and a full-page comment from musician/composer John Ottoman. It's a great little souvenir IMO. Well worth the price. And the CD itself has that shadow-Astro with the blue core shining in his chest. Awesome!

I assumed that in this case the movie's original language was Japanese, but you may be right, it might just be a joint production so English may be closer to the original. I never gave it a thought, I was thinking more of movies involving real actors. I guess that for the Astroboy movie, it's not as important to me as long as the movie is uncut and the translation is accurate (and I have no reason to believe there were such problems). You really lose something in an actor's performance when his voice is dubbed, plus it's annoying that the lips and speech don't match. Since animes are meant to be dubbed, it's not as bad. :D

If I'm lucky, the DVD will come with both the French and the English soundtrack anyway so I'll be able to compare.

I got the CD on Amazon, if it helps. I also bought the first 2 issues of the original Astro Boy manga put out by Dark Horse. I love it! I'd already read "The Greatest Robot In The World" prior to seeing the movie, because the Adult Swim reruns of the old Astro Boy series made me curious, but when I tried to find more Astro Boy manga, forget it - most of it was out of print. Thanks to the movie I was finally able to find more manga. I only wish the Dark Horse reprint was larger; Tezuka's drawings are really shrunk down small. But there a lot better than nothing!

heh I too just received my copy of the first two mangas and was surprised by the size. I was expecting from the pictures the pages to be more like comic book size as opposed to the small pages more like a paperback novel. But I'm sure I'll get used to it. I'm reading throughh The Astro Boy Essays before I begin on the manga, but I'm greatly looking forward to it.

One thing about this movie - it seems to be sparking a great interest and love for Astro Boy and is getting people interested in the mangas/older animes, either again or for the first time. In my case, I always glossed over the character and never paid attention or really checked Astro Boy out until this movie, and now I'm eating up everything I can find. ^.^

I added it to my Amazon.com wish list for now. :)
I am going to see if a local store has it first, so I can listen to it as soon as possible.
If none of the local stores have it, then I will order it.
Below is a link to the CD on Amazon.com for those interested:

Deep Discount also has it just a bit cheaper and always free shipping (http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewproduct.htm?productId=83444116). (Though I will say they're usually a bit slower than Amazon.com in shipping).
