That lead me to believed that a decision was made to "soften" the word from something like "pray" -- which points to a belief in something "bigger than us all" which could assist us -- to "hope" which does not make that point as directly.

Plenty of scientists believe in God -- in Pluto, Ochanomizu pauses to speak to a photo of his deceased wife, as if she's still with him. I respectfully disagree about your impression of him. Now Dr. Tenma I DO believe to be more atheist or agnostic --

Interesting to ponder this, but I wish they would keep the translations as true as possible.

AprilSeven, do you mean pruned from the 2009 film, or altogether?

My point is, it does seem like butt guns and religion are two items that get pruned in translation (to the US, at least).

Altogether.

I remember watching a "Deleted Scenes" video on YouTube -- and it features numerous scenes of Astro firing his 'rear cannons' and images of characters praying, or making the sign of the Cross, etc.

Here it is -- this is part 3 -- you'll see the comments from viewers noticing the same things.

I'm sure I'm a bit more sensitive than most people to the religion-reference removal -- as Astro Boy and Jesus both got me through a tough childhood and less than idyllic adult life. Gotta stand up for my homies. ;)

But "they" also cut a lot emotional dialogue in the 2003 anime -- then read the 2003 manga and get even more engrossed with the inner workings of the characters. I'm really grateful for the Internet and people on this forum from around the world who have shared these other translations.

Thank you guys!!!

 Thanks for the link! That guy (or gal) really went all-out to make those comparisons. I myself have noted many of the same cuts in my notes to the B&W series, but to see those subtitles-- Oooh, how pleased I am, especially as I have been trying to determine the names of the characters. I listen for the name markers, such as suffixes, but often cannot find them. I will run those youtube video again, & note the names.

I believe that deleated scenes video was from one of the two 60's series Astro Boy DVD sets.

I believe wingedmushroomofdoom on YouTube could fill you in on where she got the deleted scenes featurettes -- it appears to be on one of the collections, and from what I can figure out, it might only be on the Australian version?

here -

It doesn't appear to be on that American version (I found on The Right Stuf site). Does anybody out there know for sure? I'd like to purchase one with the deleted scenes (Happy birthday to ME! :D )

Here are links to all three YouTube videos of deleted scenes
