Probably my biggest qualm is...Astro's outfit. *ducks as fellow members pelt her with nuts and bolts* I much prefer him in "civilian clothing". In the 1960's anime it doesn't matter because he never is off duty, but in the 2003 anime he goes about his business in his trunks and boots. :d oh: If you're in society, dress like appropriately. I'm not bothered by him showing "skin", but nothing says "Robot! Here!" than him dressing differently from the humans.

I have to say, this is very well put!!! I got used to him looking "robotty" because for almost 40 years I only thought of him "on duty" 24/365. The subsequent animes really flesh out his personality (no pun intended), so the clothes really are appropriate.

@Jeffbert -- I remember seeing her throw that switch!! That was REALLY FUNNY (more Tezuka slap-stick!). But you know, they never really "introduced" him in the 60's anime (at least the English dubbed version). He's just kind of "there" and very brash. That teacher/P.I. role is great though.

Come to think of it, Dinny and Specs (from the 60's) didn't seem like they'd be likely friends for Astro, either -- just goofy and noisy. Yet in the subsequent animes and manga, they are much more developed personalities (Abercrombie and Tomao).

Please nobody kill me maliciously, but I am not at all a fan of Uran. *hides*

Sorry, but she just rubs me the wrong way. She's whiny, egotistical and just someone I think I' rather like to avoid at all cost. I don't hate her...I just don't care for her. I understand she is a crucial character to the Astro-verse and she balances out her brother, but maaaaan, she needs to shut up. xD

If we're including the movie in this, then yeah I hate Cora with a passion. While she may be cannon in the movie's universe, she belongs in a cannon in mine. *lights fuse*

-If I offended any Uran or Cora fans, well...I'm sure some of you dislike Tawashi and Shunsaku Ban. So there. xP

I didn't like Uran from the '80s series since she was very annoying and seemed to have a voice as deep, if not deeper than Astro's voice.

I have to agree 80's Uran is a total princess in the worst possible meaning of the word (even though she is cute looking). She's still pretty selfish in the 03 too. Only back in the 60s did she seem a little more like what I would expect Astro's sister to be like. I guess Dr. Elefun wanted to give Astro a CHALLENGE in his life!!

I wonder if Tezuka modeled her after a little girl he knew (or a sister...?)

Note: I thought Urasawa completely transformed her in the Pluto manga. She's cute, mischievous, but also compassionate and driven to help the suffering. Gotta love that. Plus her boinky pony tales are adorable.

Uran in the 03 anime yay she was cute but she puts you in the mind of 5-6 year old but manga she was more like a sister (you just need to read the manga) but in the 80's the dub didn't work well with me but the subbed protrayed her better and even in the original manga she was what a little sister was

My all-time least favourite character is Dr. Foola, AKA Dr. Mini-Mini, AKA Dr. I.Q. Plenty. I can't stand him already in Tezuka's original works, but having him be a front seat antagonist in NOW! Comics' series was aggravating.

Least favourite concept...my younger brother and I always thought it was weird that Astro would get a second set of parents. I bought this "Astro's Greatest Adventures" DVD in the summer of 2006 that was ten of the 1980's episodes in English-only. We basically watched all of it, and due to the missing information, thought Astro had human parents. Like, he and Uran were adopted by a human couple who wanted to help raise them.

I started reading the manga and found out they were robots, and I got the full box set later that year. Then we were watching that episode with the snow that drains robot energy, and at the part when Astro's mom runs out to get Uran but passes out, my brother just went, "She's a robot?!"

And then we talked for a while about how it was pretty pointless to make these robots just to be parents and married. I mean, that's kind of sad, if you think about it really hard. :(

Also: I love the 1980's dub like an old worn-out toy, but I have to admit that Uran's voice is too unfitting. It's like, she's chasing after Astro, opens her mouth, and then this low thing comes out...

@Fauna - YES about the mandatory classic-family setup. But then, the 80's series was kind of hung-over from the 60's (Toby Boynton?), from which I remember Astro pining away for a mother (which doesn't seem logical, seeing as how HE didn't have Tobio/Toby/Astor's memories in those versions).

You'd think he'd bond with Dr. Elefun and that would be that. And that railroad spike thingie that pops out of the robot father's head - what is up with that?

I really had trouble watching the 80's version at first because of the voices (nothing against the voice actors -- the just didn't seem to match the characters the way I expected after the 60's and 2003 series). I'm used to them now, and am able to focus on the stories which really are great.

The DVDs include the Japanese dub with subtitles. ;)

It's so hard to choose a character I dislike in Astro Boy. Even the worst villains are kinda likable in their own screwed-up way.

You know what, Fauna? I never thought about it but I totally agree with you. :/ I mean, Astro's parents seemed more like...plot devices rather than actual parents. They had little development in any of the series or manga and were mostly just....well, for lack of a better word...stupid. xD

Maybe that's why I prefer the 2003 series - no annoying parents thrown in at the last minute....

...and YEAH, Uran has a SUPER DEEP MANLY VADER voice in the 1980's series! xD I prefer her in Pluto, kthnx.
