1980's Astro would have become an American?

In the corpus, it is established that there are laws restricting robots, best look in the vol 19 THE BLUE KNIGHT, which is where most of the restrictions are listed. Perhaps, in the 1980s version, America had few if any such laws.

I think it was because Astro Boy was a secret project, and his colleagues thought it was highly dangerous. And when Astro went out Tenma thought the public knew and took him to America. But then Elefun takes him back... interesting.

after he landed in hot water in Japan, Dr. Tenma told Astro they were going to move to America, "where we'll be free!"

I wasn't aware of that in the 1980 series, I know only a few eipsodes from it. That's a strange twist for Tezuka, I never thought he would chose America over Japan or say they'd be "free". Maybe Tenma thought he'd have more room to develop and research.

So that means the robot circus happened in America?

Yup, the train runs toward Chicago at one point (as the song playing points out).

Fact: Tezuka DID visit America in 1980.

I wonder what was first - the first episodes of Astro Boy '80 or the 1980 San Diego Comic Book Convention.

@Saruta - Tezuka visted the US in 1964, where he met Walt Disney at the World's Fair. See Frederick Schodt's book "The Astro Boy Essays" - excellent insights and background into Tezuka's life and Astro's "part" in it. :-D

It'll be better if Tezuka Productions actually had a say in the plot. :shifty:
