Yeah, he just sticks out his fanny... it's amazing just how practical such an amusing weapon choice turned out to be! Maybe Tezuka felt he needed to come up with a practical excuse for such a bizarre weapon location... A reason besides his rather corny sense of humor.

Well they come in handy every time a giant robot grabs him in their large hands!

Well, yes, that's what I said. Practical for such a ridiculous concept. He had to make it sensible somehow, thus why there are many (admittedly amusing/bizarre-looking) examples of their usefulness.

I knew I wasn't mad when I saw lots of butt-guns in the English version. I think the weapon's placement was just for pure humor and not for practicality at all!
