@ Jeffbert -- that's funny!! And I remember OUR parents saying things like that about the Baby Boomers, too (alas, the "Me" Generation!)

@Pretty -- I do agree about the overexposure point that you make. I wonder if people in Japan feel Atom is overexposed!? They seem to just love him (and Uran) whenever they show up!

I doubt it; from what I seem too gather, Japanese society as a whole seems to embrace pacifism a bit more here than we do in the west. As a result, peopl probably embrace Astro as more of a national icon and symbol of hope because of what he stands for. And by default, the same can be said of anything else with pacifistic views.

Case in point; Gundam Seed's infamous sequel Destiny. It's not well liked in America for various reasons (though it does have its fans), but is rather well liked in Japan regardless of any story or production problems.
