I agree, it's nice to have the two of you together here. While I'm at it, I appreciate crazy2000's contribution as well. :)

BTW, it was my son, David (Crazyd2000) that turned me on to this forum. I had nearly forgotten this project, but was telling David about it a couple of years ago, and then googled Astro Boy and discovered that the DVD set had been released. I bought it, and now David has watched every episode more than once, and discovered this forum. He's been intermittently active on it for some time.

Jay, why don't you give Tom N a call at WHA? I bet he'd be glad to help, and if anyone has masters, it would be him. I have the master 1/4" reel of the theme song that we recorded, for some reason.

Great to connect with you again.

Mike

Thanks, dear old friend. I wish we could have lunch again at the Black Bear or Paisan's. But they're now gone! Well, Paisan's is still here, but it's moved and changed.

There was documentary footage shot of us as we closed production. That's what I'm trying to find -- that and the pilot that apparently no one has seen since (gulp) 1980. I am already in very good touch with folks here, including Tom, and the search is on. I want to find and preserve all content possible for DVD extras. I also want to reunite the cast and do a new show for the fans -- audio only. "Doctor Who" fans do this a lot, with those series' casts. I wish you were here to engineer it.

I can hardly believe you have a son, let alone a son who can type! How did we ever get to be so old?

More DVD commentary:

"The Great Meltdown"

Oh! Pointy Livian is back? I hope she's at least 18 now. Or 16. 12?

Why does Livian have ice cream cones coming out of her head? Sorry, but I'm hungry.

Wow, Brian (Elefun) is so good. He was the best of all of us. Not the best with multiple voices, but so fine in that single interpretation.

I am one of the voices on the telephone to Elefun.

Wow! Is this the first media reference to global warming?

"Astro Fights Aliens"

Yet another bad, literal title from the Japanese translators.

Paul Nelson is the first voice, as Prof. Moss. I never said it before, but he is such a gentle and kind man. Tall and slim, he towered over the rest of us. But he was always the first to laugh.

Lt. Blackstone is me. Sounded like Dave at first, but then you get my flat twang (ugh, sorry). The officer who finds the stowaway is Rich Ganoung. The Stowaway is Kahlei Slick.

HAH! Lt. Nelson mentioned in dialogue? That is the cast's Paul Nelson, of course, and a tribute to his friendliness and good humor.

The "luminous object" crewman is Greg Zerkle.

Wow, Blackstone sounds like Dave so much, but I know it's me -- uh, because it is bad in parts. Dave would do better.

Dave and I were kind of twins in the cast -- same age and experience. Between us, we took all the tiny parts. A very fine actor. As I noted above, only he and I were called back for the sequel series.

I wonder if, similar to "Doctor Who," we might do brand new radio versions of the show? I know I can get Paul, Dave and Astro herself -- Patty.

But I promise you this: I am going to find the pilot, and it will be released to you one way or another. If we all have to re-record it, we will.

Hooray!!

"Astro Fights Aliens"

Yet another bad, literal title from the Japanese translators. How many times has Astro already fought aliens?

Paul Nelson is the first voice, as Prof. Moss. I never said it before, but he is such a gentle and kind man. Tall and slim, he towered over the rest of us. But he was always the first to laugh.

Dave and I were kind of twins in the cast -- same age and experience. Between us, we took all the tiny parts. A very fine actor. He does musical theater, too, which I cannot. He is a marvelous man. He just got married and they are expecting their first child. As I noted above, only he and I were called back for the sequel series.

Ha! So disco! And get that Astro "Village People" suit!

No, now I think Blackstone is Dave. Rich Ganoung and I are the other crew, though, with Zerkle.

Wow, Kahlei has such a rich voice. She should have been used more. She was a really leggy, hugely buxom actress. Ahem. You had to be there :) Kahlei was so, so bright -- a very smart woman. After Patty (Astro), she is probably the best actress I have ever met; Debbie was a children's theater director and the oldest of us -- she must be in her 60s now.

Patty of course was our hero. Just always so good, and I so loved her -- still do. She was "Pattybear" to me. She is Pattybear to all of you now, too. She was pregnant in the pilot. I saw her daughter born, grow up, go to college, and then go on to lead her own rich life. Ugh, how did I get to be so old?

Yeah, Blackstone is Dave.

"Save the Carolina 3"

This was perhaps the third show we recorded. Very, very early in the series.

First ship officer is Greg Zerkle, captain is Brian Parry. I am the nutty computer voice. Paul Nelson is Neal; his kid is Kahlei. Debbie Holmes as a classmate with the ballcap finally gets a name: Theodore. And I am goofy-toothed Billie. Rich Ganoung is Alvin, as always. Wow, lots of Billie lines for me!

Ha! Skunk's musical theme! But no Skunk! I am still the black-hatted villain, though.

Ha, again! It is Skunk! I was wrong.

Whoa! These have to be be best Skunk laughs ever.

Taping out of sequence, we in the cast did not know of Walrus, Elefun, Astro's mom and dad, Urane and so on. They all came up as very pleasant surprises. This was a very early show -- before any of us knew that any of those characters existed.

This was the 1st animated version of Atom's 33rd manga adventure (as the main character, "Captain Atom" or "Ambassador Atom" had Tamao 'Specs'/'Theodore' as the main character & thus I count that as Atom's 0th adventure):
Dark Horse Title: S.O.S. From a Satellite

Tezuka Osamu World: Manga Works title: Satellite SOS (Original title: Asteroid SOS)

Dark Horse volume: 18

As I recall, this was fairly well adherant to the manga's plot; however, there were notable differences. The little boy's name was 'Genchin' (hard ‘g’ ;) in the manga & the anime had:
'Gen' (hard ‘g’ ;)
'Genji' (hard ‘g’ ;) (‘Gen-man’ sub) 'Hoshiyama' as his name.

Oh, I am so sorry  for in my eagerness to add data, I had forgotten to thank you for the precious information you have provided!

"The Rainbow Comet"

I am the announcer.

Pigtailed classmate is Becky; all other classmate credits are the same. I recall this as the second show we ever taped.

This episode is unusual in that all of us are trying so hard to match lip movements. You can hear how it makes our speech staggered. Again, a sign of how early in the series we did this show.

Ha! Pointy Livian returns. Sorry, but it's just really creepy that Atlas would be with a 12 year old.

"The Death Balloon"

I am so scared by the title already!

Very cool opening flying shot.

Some may have already noted that Gumshoe is designed after the American cartoon character Mutt, in "Mutt and Jeff." All classmate credits same as before.

I believe Bob Gonzalez is the fat crook.

Ick, bad Skunk voice. Too high-pitched!

This was another very early show. I remember trying to match lip movements in that huge close-up.

Wow, more Skunk laughs than in any other episode!
