Oh, Duh. I should have suspected that the horizontal lines were not part of the original image! I cannot figure out how I could have been so dense!

I had a nightmare as a kid, in which I was dreaming that I was drowning. When I awoke, I was in a similar position to Atom here:

My god. Now i'm hearing Plankton from Spongebob.
"It's too cute! Need hatetrid!"

I know what you mean! That thing they do in anime where the eyes have additional white dots in them to show strong emotion has been parodied quite a few times in Spongebob.

 Thanks, DrFrag & Dragonrider1227. These pics are all sooooooo
cute, especially the last one as Astro falls out of his bed :D .
Ah yes, speaking of Livian - We have to keep in mind that she's already in a
liaison with this handsome guy.
Maybe this pic helps us coming down to earth a little again ;) :) :D .

You're welcome. I've had these pictures for a while. Thanks to http://www.photobucket.com I was able to post them. Also, looking at Dfrags pictures I have to say. When you look into Astros eyes when he's about to cry, you can almost feel like you're about to cry with him. I can't say how he does that, but he does. And very well.

:) I agree completely. That's one of those things that makes Tezuka's style so unique.
When I look at other certain animes which I won't name, I always notice that they are
lacking of emotions to pass on. That's it what sets a good anime apart from a bad one B) ;) .

While all three have definite pleading all over them, clearly, the most pitiful is this one. I think the mouth makes all the difference.

Yeah, I get that too! Anime uses big eyes to convey emotion.

If there's one episode that brings me the closest to tears, it's The Light Ray Robot from the 80s series. When I saw episode 4 of the 2003 series (which tells the same story) I was expecting the same ending and I got all choked up!

I read somewhere that the thing that makes a good anime is whether you care about the characters. It doesn't matter what the quality of the animation is like or whether you're the target demographic, it's all about whether it pulls you in emotionally. Which is why I don't care much for Mickey Mouse and pretty much every other western cartoon.

Okay, happy one now. :)

The writers' ability to evoke the readers' or viewers' empathy for the protagonists is what separates the successful from the unsuccessful stories. Cuteness has a lot to do with it, but it ain't everything. I read Frankenstein a few years ago, and although the description of the monster was rather ugly, I could not help but empathize with him.

I think that Tezuka created Atom based upon that character as much as he based him upon Pinocchio. Having read both, I could clearly see influences from both. The thoughtless creation of the artificial human, for one's own satisfaction, thinking nothing of its best interests, the rejection thereof, were borrowed from Frankenstein. The incident in the circus came from Pinocchio. Manga 6-8 even give Atom an insect-person companion, who like Jiminy Cricket, acts as an advisor for a very Naive young boy.

One thing I like about Tezuka's animations, especially Astro Boy, is that they have an actual story plot. He brings emotions into the characters and doesn't just have the characters fight each other all the time. He also makes it like you're there and you can relate to the character. This is why I don't watch too much animation anymore. Because all they do now is fight.

I currently watch Fist of the North Star, which on my first exposure to it, I almost hated. But, when I viewed it as a B-movie, I found myself laughing until I was red-faced. It actually has a half-decent plot, that is what you would have if Bruce Lee played the lead role in Road Warrior. There are thousands of green-haired mohawked 400 pound psychos who prey upon the villagers, and this guy makes their heads explode by simply touching them! Some bad guys are 30 feet tall and 10 feet wide. Yet, nobody but 1 or 2 guys who show up all too infrequently can touch this guy!!

OK, so maybe Brue Lee is the wrong guy. I suppose if you took the worst of the Kung Fu movies and crossed them with Road Warrior... I saw this one really terrible one where the guy had a technique called Death-Lock. He could pinch his oppenent and 30 seconds later, the guy was dead. But he could pinch him again before the time expired, and the guy was ok. As I recall, there was no plot, just fighting.

Ochanamizu was yelling at him when he did something bad, but how can you stay mad at that face?

Here's a cool CGI pic I found at him. I think it was at the offical website for the PS2 game.
