The most fun I have with is Abra's french voice. Hearing him talking like that compensates for the missing scenes.

"Je m'ähäpelle Äbrä!"

I guess we must choose between sadness and scenario consistency :P

Actually it's pretty cool. We have the opportunity to choose between 2 different ending versions: 'sad/ true' or 'less sad/less true'. I guess it depends on one's personal mood when it comes to the choice which ending to prefer.
Right now, I'm sticking with the english ending. :P

I watched a few minutes of The Greatest Robot in the World in French and I was surprised at how much was cut. Uran getting electrocuted by Bruton's hand, Xeron getting torn apart after being immune to the electric horns, Brondo flying out of the sea and landing back in the whirlpool, etc.
I'm impressed by the consistently good voice acting though (both series).

Hahaha! This was one episode I had recorded 15 years ago, so I watched it many times.

The thing is they didn't want any robot to be destroyed forever, so that's why they cut almost all the fights. After Bruton got out off the sea, he says Brondo is "asleep"; since Xeron isn't torn apart, we are left to think he is only "asleep" too. And at the end of part 2, Astro asks Elefun if he can repair Bruton and Elefun says he'd rather put time and work so that the robots "sleeping" because of Bruton can be repaired.

But they really made one stupid change to the scenario: instead of putting a suicide bomb inside Bruton, Abra says it's a device allowing Bruton to increase his power if needed. So at the end of the episode, Bruton is becoming friend with Astro, then mysteriously disappear to reappear as Bora, but no, Bora isn't a new robot, it's Bruton again... And since Bruton didn't commit suicide, Astro can hope he can be repaired...

For anyone who had seen the French version before the English version, had you ever noticed that some things were wrong?

I have to admit that although I wasn't a child anymore when I watched it again, it had never crossed my mind that Bruton's transformation was due to cuts in the episodes... I did wonder how a robot could transform itself that way, but I could only accept it as such. I also wondered why Astro, who had fallen so many times without a scratch before, could be so badly injured because of a fall in "The Death Balloon" (they cut the scene in which the mayor shot him and left us thinking Astro got hurt when he rushed after the balloon). But if I hadn't recorded those episodes and watched them more than once, I probably wouldn't have had such questions.

FYI, I also remember where the cuts were in "Atlas Forever" and "The Hijacked Airship", and although I was frustrated to see what I had missed, from what I remember, the stories were alright. Atlas even dies at the end: how could they do that to us, poor french children?!???!! Really, those of you who watched the series as it was must all have been totally traumatized after watching so many deaths! ;) I wonder how "The Lightray Robot" ends...!

BTW, Goliath too is alive at the end of his episode since it ends with Astro giving him his head back. [Side note: it's obvious that the same man who did Goliath's voice in English also did Atlas, so each time I hear a desperate Goliath saying "My own head attacking me!!!!!", I can't help it, I see Atlas saying it and it so doesn't fit him that it make me laugh each time!]

I also like the voices in French. I don't know why, but Astro comes out more mature in French, and not only because of his voice; but maybe it's just me. It was a woman who did his voice in French too.

I forgot to add something: Astro's "technical problem" in the first episode actually MAKES SENSE in the French version! :P Boynton attempts an explanation and there is a brief flashback to the scene where Astro crashed into the electric wires! ;)

Last year I saw the 2 episodes of "the greates robot of the world" in French before seeing it in other languages, and before knowing about those "missing scenes" too. I remember I was puzzled by Pluto's "reapparition" Some days later I saw the Japanese version... and it was the moment when I understood what the expression "missing scene" really meant :o And even with that I knew nothing. A few days later again I saw the 2 first episodes in Japanese: I realized the English version had been literally slaughtered

Man, they cut so much out in other countries versions, like Astro bowing in a kimono in Uran the Tomboy. I'm glad I have the original Japanese version of the 80's Astro, or should I say Atomu? ;)

Astro's french voice was done by Flora Balzano.
She appears to be an authoress now and has written several books.

I recently found an online interview with her, here's the link.
I think she's talking about her childhood and her dubbing work in general, at least that's what I got as far my modest french takes me (and the helter-skelter google translation too :D ).
She has her roots in italy, hence the name 'Balzano'.

I too always liked the 80's Astro's french voice. He appears to have a slight lisp, that's what adds the most cuteness to his french speech.

Ohhhhhhhhh! I had seen that link a few days ago but couldn't figure out what was the commercial they were talking about... Those commercials are hilarious (and I usually HATE commercials more than anyone I know)!!! What's even funnier is that even though she says she has a French/Italian accent in real life, those commercials use an old French-Canadian accent, almost a dialect (called "joual" here) because they take place at least 100 years ago... Very ironic! That's what she says in the last paragraph, and she had been told to not change her accent for it because it sounded just right!

That means the dubbing was probably done in Québec, not in France as I thought it probably was... So the people from here are responsible for those awful cuts?

Well I wouldn't call it a lisp, because to me (at least to my non-European ears ;) ) he sounds impeccable, almost too perfect and that's one of the reason why I find him more mature in French. But I know what you mean and I agree, there is that little something special in his voice. :)

Hmmmm ... Toby, Tornado, Niki, Pook's Mother, Lt Blackstone, Buck's Father, Suzi's Grandpa, Prof Adams, Prof Leopold, Chille, Morlock, Lt Miner, Zamerah, Captain Cloud, Prof Gould, Light-Ray, Randolf Holmes, Chico, The Professor, Walpur Guiss, Robio and Robiette, Kybalt, Ben, Cruiser, Ox, Mosquito, Cleopatra, Barbary, Caesar, Goliath, Atlas, Livian, Captain Kili, Captain Kili's Brother, The Scientist Guy Who Was Standing Next To Captain Kili's Brother, Mt Blanc, Molnar, Brondo, Xeron, Hercules, Photar, Bruton and Bora.

*twitch*

Speaking of Light-Ray, I was actually disappointed in the 2003 series when Denkou didn't die. I was all prepared to reach for the Kleenex, then Astro saves the day in a stupid Hollywood ending.
I was emotionally betrayed!

I get that with "I! Want! My! Head!". :D
