I just finished the 80's Astro tin box and it was well worth the money. I don't have time now, but I'll post the pros and cons of the set later. I also have the Japanese box set 2 for the 80's series which has the last half of the series, so I can compare English and Japanese eps. The extras didn't have everything that was cut, still no Astro bowing in kimono robe, like in Cybotron's signature. :( Still, the tin box set is great, so buy it. ;)

Astro bowing in his kimono IS in the extras.

Hmm, too bad this is only the first half of the series...it had occured to me that 52 episodes didn't seem like a series, but I guess these are the only ones that made it to the western world??? [/b][/quote]
51 episodes -> English. 52 were all there ever were in the series.

Could you tell us exactally where the kimono scene is, I couldn't find it anywhere. Is it a hidden "egg" as they call them?

Here's some Japanese links about the 80's Astro:

I have box set 2 and I'll get box set 1 soon. :lol:
52 Japanese episodes were made, but there were nearly 200 in the 60's series. Plus a 1964 Astro movie in color. :wahah:

It is in the deleted scenes section on the extras disc. Select 'Uran the Tomboy' and there it is...

...um, OK, I went to double check and this scene doesn't contain Astro in his Kimono--it's got Mustachio/Walrus in his kimono. Now I am confused and embarassed...

Jeffbert--Thanks for clarifying the number of episodes. I thought someone was saying there were 105 episodes or something but had been under the impression since the beginning that the Madman box was the complete series.

Do not confuse the incarnations.

60s: 192 eps, but only about 1/2 --> English
80s: 52 eps, but only 51* --> English
2003: 50 eps, 12 to 15 -->English so far

*Episodes 2 & 3 of the Japanese were highly edited, and made into one episode. Thus:

ep 1 -> ep 1 Eng
ep 2 & 3 chopped to pieces --> ep 2 Eng
ep 4-> ep 3 Eng, except that the sequence was altered, & I cannot say with certainty that 4 --> 4 rather than some other #. :D

Thought I might add the only complaint I could find about the tin box was in Uran's Quest.
Ok, at the end when Uran finds out that Dr. Elefun is her "God" and Dr. Elefun says "Yes, if that's the way you want to look at it", and she says "NO!". Well, there was a audio hiccup at a crucial moment, making her say "NO" too soon, before her mouth moved, throwing the timing off and ruining the joke. <_< Ohh well, at least the tape version is in sync. :lol:

That's interesting, because my Siren VHS copy has a tracking problem right at that moment. It mostly affects the audio.

By the way, for people in Australia, Big W is now selling the boxed set for $158. :wahah: This is my cue to shop. :D

I think the reason of that scene's video interference could've been faulty NTSC to PAL convertion. The frames very much look like as there had appeared some encoding problems during the episodes' taping.
The Siren tapes' audio seems to me like the tape recorder's Fast Forward button had been pressed for about 1 second. This must had happened during the mastering since every Siren tape seem to have the same interference at this episode's scene.

Since MadMan had used the japanese masters, this little visual interference disappeared from the DVD. The one thing that has remained is Uran's chopped "No!", and that pretty much out of sync like Atoman correctly noticed. B)

Here's what the Siren tape's video interference looks like:

Quite a mess! :P

I'm thinking the siren tapes may be Austrailian, if so then both siren and madman probably used the same film master to make the tapes and dvds, and the fault may lie in the master film, which may be all they had to work with. In my country(the U.S.) a diferent company owns the 80's rights(Manga Entertainment) and though the dub is the same, the film masters we use I'm sure are different or else we use Japanese prints with our soundtracks. So if you all want to see the way that joke was suposed to sound then track down a Manga Entertainment version on ebay or amazon. It'll be worth the tape. I'm keeping mine for that reason. :lol:

Whoa! Mine's nowhere near that bad.

Here's an AVI clip of it (466k DivX4):

I have one of the Manga tapes, and it's noticably different. First of all, the picture is clearer. The Siren version obviously suffered from the frame rate change of NTSC to PAL.
Secondly, the first scene of Dr Boynton's house in the first episode looks like this:

The Siren version doesn't have "2030 A.D. Tokyo" in the corner. It appears in the original Japanese though, so I'm not sure how they got a copy that was missing it.
I spent years as a kid wondering when Astroboy was set, so I could figure out if I'd live long enough to meet him. :lol:
There may be other small changes. Obviously, the Manga version has the episode trailers which Siren cut out (and hooray for Madman for putting them back in! ;) .

Edit: the Manga and Siren versions are both of the same US dub.

:unsure: Correct me if I'm wrong, but as what I've seen the MadMan DVDs don't feature any episode previews.
The only ep-preview I remember seeing on the Siren tapes was the one from'The Great Meltdown', showing at the end of 'The Robot Vikings'.
