60's non-dubbed episodes
I'd love to buy it, but I can't justify $2000+ for the set. Or understand Japanese.

Try buying just one, they're only 2 to 3hundred U.S. dollars each. Just choose the one that has your favorites on it. Might I recomend Set 2 which has the first Uran eps. plus the color print of Earth Defense Army. It's worth it just for that episode. As far as Japanese language, the animation tells much of the story and plus if your familiar with the manga versions, then you really don't need much diallog.

I'm thinking they probably did use extra footage to link the stories. The Earth Defense Army episode was entirely in color, but the Bem episode was done in tinted black n white for mood effects, like silent movies did. It's cool, I have it too. Unfortunately the Robot Rocketship was in black n white. I have a cd that features an audio recording of a 60's Astro episode about Astro rescuing some kidnapped children, with the help of his sister Uran, and the Earth defense forces, no. 7 included, so maybe that's some of the extra linking footage.
As far as the other Astro movies, Marine Express is availible at cdjapan, I just got my copy today. The other one, Shinsen qumi is not availible except to watch at the Tezuka museam, sorry.

I would strongly suggest that no one buys these. Considering Madman is going to release the 60's series, and it HAS to be based on the Japaneese masters, it is almost a certainty that it will be all the surviving episodes.
How on earth they intend dubbing them, however, is anyones guess. Maybe it will be sub only? I would not mind in the least if this was the case. They have released Sub only series before with high sucess.

With a bit of work they could remaster the English audio and put it over the Japanese masters. But this would mean making cuts in the masters to sync the audio, since some scenes were edited. I don't know if they'll go that far. They didn't for the 80s series, but then again they were working from better stock.
The Right Stuf has 36 episodes available, and at least another 36 episodes are available through this private trader. That leaves a few missing, but I'm sure there must be the vocal track masters lying around somewhere, either at NBC or with fans who taped the audio (like with Dr Who).
The remaining 91 episodes that were never dubbed, haven't, as far as I know, ever been subbed either. Do Madman do translations and subbing?
They might only do ones they can get hold of in English.
