The INFO POPUP stated that ANYDVD was scanning the disc, but I lost patience after about 5 minutes, & used my older drive, which worked fine. I do not know that the newer drives WILL NOT work, just that so far, it takes longer than I would wait. I must add that ARABIAN NIGHTS also took a long while before it was scanned by ANYDVD, but, as I was reading BJ 14, it was not so noticeable.

I'm not too anxious about it. I'm a computer nerd.

yesasia, as "Magma Taishi."

"jeffbert" wrote:That is a lot of stuff, you will be busy forever. When I thought the live-Atom was gone, I considered Microid S, but as I knew very little about it, other than the Tz sites page for it, I went for the others.

There is a reasoning behind what Tezuka DVDs I buy, and what I don't buy (yet). But it's not particularly interesting. Ultimately I want to have everything, some day.

I finished discs 1 & 2 & with them, THREE ZETO (ZZZ), & NOW HAVE STARTED #3, & SPHINX, though I have doubts about ever finishing it, because the crab robots are just so hilarious, & I might die laughing at them.

It took ANYDVD at least 5 minutes to scan this disc, I know not exactly how long, as I had left the room to watch JEOPARDY.

BTW, Atom wears a full costume in this one, complete with gloves; his spikes are also different. :D

 On a sad note, the 1st, 5th, & 6th segments of this story are absent.

How awesome would it have been if they had created and seamlessly integrated "motion manga" for the missing segments...

It would be cool; I have not yet examined all the discs, so, there may be some extras on #8, but I doubt it. On the 36 discs set, two episodes are absent from their proper places on the menus because their video is either gone or full of gaps. What is left of them is found in the EXTRAS section. But I really doubt that this set will have any, as there is just not room on 8 discs for 65 segments. The 1st 4 discs have had 7, 6, 6, & 7 segments each, so I think perhaps it may have been a matter of economics rather than missing material. They may have chosen to exclude a few segments from certain stories rather than use 9 or 10 discs. Still, $400 is big bucks for DVDs & for that much $, we should expect the entire series, if available. Strange Wings is translating the booklet, as he has OCR w/ Japanese capability, & can read a bit of it himself, he should give us the answers. :astro:

BTW, there was only 1 CRAB ROBOT, the story had a ton of stuff in it that I never expected, & SPHINX itself was even funnier than the crab. I have started #3, FRANKENSTEIN, & this too, has stuff I did not expect. Lamp is there, as his actor is listed on the fan-site that is linked elsewhere, & his glasses are easy to spot.

Is there any explanation as to why his appearance changes in the later installments?

I  :astro: :)

I hope the booklet that SW is translating will mention that.

BTW, Shibugaki is just a normal-sized boy, Tawashi wears a uniform & everyone calls him '-san' rather than '-keibu' (police inspector). Nobody is fat; Ochanomizu has a beard. In FRANKENSTEIN, there is the villain boss who resembles OKAMI ITO'S arch enemy, RETSUDO, or, for that matter, just about any of the martial arts films' old masters. White hair, eyebrows a mile wide, etc.

In the anime, I can usually follow the plot, but here, it is just too confused. Like the REPUBLIC serials, the side with the upper hand changes constantly.

This series must have been creeper than a Guinea Pig film. That Astro doll falling to the infinite will always chase me in my nightmares.

By reading the manga chapter of Fuhrer ZZZ (took 1 hour) and then watching the drama version of it (6 hours), I was able to understand well enough what was going on. A few parts had me confused, but I would usually get it after the scene was over. I'm still a bit lost at that airport scene near the end though; I wonder who it was that Dr. Lyon went to meet. I had a feeling of déjà vu as well, as if I had read a different Astro Boy chapter before where two important people met at an airplane while Astro was on the lookout for bad guys. I wonder if I'm wrong.

Eventually I will capture frames from this set, & that will be among them.

F-Man, Since none of these stories were 2-parts in the animated series, there was a lot of embellishment needed to turn them into a serial tv program, and cliff-hanger endings were needed. They did seem to go over the same scenes several times. Though, I lacking fluency in Japanese, am also wondering about much. :hyo: I think ZZZ had been made into a movie because I recall seeing it on Youtube, & it was much better, & shorter. So, have you finished ZZZ yet? The goofy costumes do not appear until the 2nd story! I am not sure if Franken or the Sphinx is funnier.

Now, I am in the midst of Gas People, the 5th of 5 stories, & can state that only ZZZ is on the set in its entirety, not that anything seemed to be missing. :p
