What Is That Green Band On Astro?

I wonder why Tezuka did not dress Atom in a Mawashi instead of a brief? As the former is a traditional Japanese garment, while the latter is not. I even saw an anime about high-schoolers in which the boys wore them into the school's pool, so they do have an application beyond sumo wrestling.

So THAT'S what they call those things. They look darn uncomfortable, if you ask me, but I guess it's all about what you get used to. I think Tezuka was making him more "internationally appealing" and figured he'd better stick with the ol' "Super Hero 101" look (and see, he gets criticized for Atom not wearing a shirt -- could you imagine those machine guns coming right out of his .... oh dear! Well you get the picture :blush
