In the original Outer Limits episode, which starred the actor, Nick Adams, (For those who are not familiar with the actor, Nick Adams, he first came to prominence in the James Dean starrrer, "Rebel without a Cause" and was good friends with both Elvis Presley and James Dean. He was also the star of a TV western titled, "The Rebel" where he played a character named Johnny Yuma. His other credits include, "Die, Monster, Die" a film based on an H. P. Lovecraft story; "Godzilla vs. Monster Zero" and "Frankenstein Conquers the World", two Toho Studio productions.) Adams also plays a crook on the run, who runs into the apartment of a female stranger and then they are both abducted and transported to a world where they must do battle with two alien creatures for the survival of humankind. In the classic Star Trek episode, reportedly based on a short story by author Fredric Brown titled "Arena", Kirk is transported to a planet where he must do battle with a Gorn, also where the loser is responsible for the destruction of his species. I believe there was also an episode of "Lost in Space" which had a similar plot element! Any way this plot has been used on different sci-fi series. I  :astro: :)

Just as Adams & the woman are at odds with each other, so too Ponkotsu Tetsu & Atom. Both pairs are taken against their will, & forced to work as a team; though TOL's story is a bit more involved that Atom's version. I have a detailed comparison of plot elements, though I am saving it for my book. google MY ARENA OR YOURS, & you should find a few other sci-fi series that cover Brown's story. I think this is the url:
http://reflectionsonfilmandtelevision.blogspot.com/2006/08/your-arena-or-mine.html, though it omits mention of AB's version.

Space 1999 has the weirdest one of all, after reading this page, I watched as many as I could get from Netflix, & 1999 is a real hoot. :hyo:

I do not really think anyone on the Astro Boy staff ever saw the Outer Limits episode while making "Space Showdown" because as near as I can determine from "The Outer Limits Companion" (2nd edition) TOL did not start airing in Japan until 1966. Unless the Fredric Brown story had been translated into Japanese post war and either Tezuka had read it or one of his staff did, I believe it's safe to say that the two episodes being similar is mere coincidence.

You are right about the pronounciation as the letter u is sometimes silent in Japanese so that Akuta could be pronounced as Ahk'ta.

"That info you posted about #97, it was from other sources was it not? I see no reference to it in the TRSI booklet, or Schodt's book. I do believe that it may have been inspired by TOL because its plot is actually much closer to FUN & GAMES, than to FREDRICK BROWN'S ARENA. I could list more than a few similarities. "

According to " The Outer Limits Official Companion" by Schow & Frentzen, "Fun and Games' went into production in early 1964 and first aired in the U.S. on March 30, 1964. Someone from the Astro Boy show would have had to have been in the U.S. in March of '64 in order to see the episode as I do not believe the show was airing in Japan at that time.

I suppose it could be a coincidence, but when I polish the chapter on stories that were inspired by or similar to --, I will reexamine all my notes. I, of course have no way of actually KNOWING if things were borrowed or merely are coincidentally similar, but I merely state that based upon the # of similar points, one may easily think they are related.

Take MONSTER MANTLER, for example, thread for 122 MONSTER MANTLER, the thread notes a similarity to TTZone's pilot WHERE IS EVERYBODY?, & since posting the thread, I have seen other stories that feature elements also appearing there. See the thread for more.

Who can tell. Was Jurassic Park inspired by 69, Rebellion of the Dinosaur People (59, Dinosaur Dilemma)? I could name at least 2 others that may have inspired American films, but that must wait.

IMDB says F&G aired in 1964, as do other web sources. There was an official SCIFI.com web page for this, but is has been gone for a while. Now, though it would be 2 years before it aired in J--, there may have been someone here who communicated w/ someone there, & made mention of the plot elements, but this is pure speculation on my part. I think the # of plot elements are the best measure.

Well here is one for you, Jeffbert! The Outer Limits episode first aired on March 30, 1964 with a repeat in Aug. of '64, according to The Outer Limits Companion. 2nd edition. According to Schodt, Tezuka was in New York in April 1964. Well then if Tezuka had actually landed in New York City prior to April 1st, 1964, who knows if he could have caught the episode while he was in NYC! Of course that is supposing he landed in NYC before what is stated in the Astro Boy Essays. Food for thought!

So maybe it's time for a thread so others here at Astro Boy On-line can see what we are talikng about if they have never seen "Contest in Space"! What do you say?

If I have already created a thread, fine; but otherwise, I have enough notes on the story that I am o.k. without any open discussion.

edit: oops, THIS IS an open thread. Well, anyway, I value my notes as intellectual property; actually, I even have an episode / story file on this one, & prefer to keep as stated, until publication.

Then, you are near publication? Good, because I look forward to reading your "list of similarities"! It might be as much fun as when we went head to head over my list of which episodes from the sixties series were remade in the 1980s version. (Of couse, that was at TIE!)

Well good luck and I believe I can speak for every one at this forum, when I say, can't wait to purchase a copy!

I am in the process of watching 175 &176, ROBOT WARS; & expect to upload a few images next week. Currently, there are threads for both, but only a few pics.

So anyway, I would like translations of the captions for 1 Dr. Fooler (there are 2 on p128, & 1 on 129). I already know the robot boy is 'Mercury,' & think I have the white-haired guy's name. The pic at extreme lower left on p129 would be nice to know about.

The TW site says a robot named 'Logos' is behind the evil, but I am still confused about this Logos. Is it Fooler, or the pic at extreme lower left on p129?

Sorry! Can't help you! The captions you are talking about, (if I am correct in understanding you) would take me several weeks to decipher and if I am to translate them I would have to charge you for my time. But I think you are right in saying that the robot boy's name is "Mercury"!

Really, I can help you with a character name now and again, but translating whole paragraphs is a little out of my league. So, I have to apologize and excuse myself from this one. Maybe when you put up the images someone who is more proficient in Japanese than I (hint:Strange Wings) might be able to help you. I hope you understand. But if there are other simpler questions I can help you with please do not hesitate to ask.
