Episode 42 "Hurry, You Three Second-Rate Knights!" is another good one. :D

The list is not accurate. It's just a translation straight from the Japanese and they were never broadcast with those titles. "The Devil's Place in Ordin" shows an obvious misspelling of Odin, as well as "The Monster of Kuraken" spelling Kraken wrong (the Japanese have no "Kr" sound so they add a breathed vowel). It's funny, although the Monster of Clarken doesn't really look like a Kraken I didn't realise until now that Clarken should have been translated as Kraken.
To be fair, Clarken is also a technically correct translation since the "ra" sound can mean "ra" or "la". I just haven't heard quite as many legends of ships being destroyed by The Clarken. :P

Anyway, the proper English titles were translated by Kenji Kitatani in the early 80s and should be considered the correct translations.

I love #49 "Uran Loves Hit Men" too! Can't wait to see what they'll come up with in French! :P Literally "Uranie aime le tueur à gages"?

But did they really mean "The Biggest Robot on Earth"? Cause Astro wouldn't stand a chance....

I like these! :)

"Greatest" is probably a better translation.

This reminds me of a story I heard years ago about the translation of Red Dwarf into Chinese. After a bit of digging I found I actually still have the email (dated 31/8/1996! ;) .

PY=PinYin, standardised romanisation system for Mandarin Chinese
Lit=a literal translation, word for word in the order of the chinese characters
Mns=work that out for yourself

...

PY  - Au-lei-san-dai dai dai dik dai dai-kaan
(That's not PinYin, it's Cantonese phoneticised, because it sounds better, try saying it)
Lit - Asia-(unknown)-mountain-big big supreme <'s> big too-(unknown)
Mns - Alexander-the-Great's chief eunuch
This is my favourite, the first bit is meaningless, but is how the powers that be create Chinese versions of Western names, ie Au-lei-san-dai sounds like Alexander if you say it with a Chinese accent.
It's also very witty in Chinese because when Rimmer says it, and the Cantonese-speaking viewer forms the words in his/her head, it becomes a Chinese word-joke because of the recurrence of the sound "dai" five times in only six syllables (dead sophis, innit?)

Dai is also Japanese for Large. I guess it's one of those borrowed Chinese symbols. But there's so many synonyms for large (great, big, etc), so it's easy to see how The Greatest Robot in The World could be translated as The Biggest Robot in The World. However, it's probably another case of machine translation where the subtlely of the meaning was missed.

Au Québec, Astro Boy (la nouvelle série) n'est pas très populaire :( ! j'ai l'impression d'être la seul fan !

J'aimer lire vos discussions d'astroboy :D , sa me permet d'être au courant de tout :D ! En plus, les doujinshi d'Adrian_68 sont très jolie :P !

C'est tout ce que je voulais dire, et j'espere que ca ne vous fâche pas que j'écrive en français....

Hi! I'll translate, so no need to worry! :)

Hi! (Sorry I speak French and little English  ) ... I like Astro Boy a lot !! But my friends don't like him, they find him too childish  ! It's such a shame ! I have no friend with whom I could share my passion for astroboy ! *snif*snif*

In Québec, Astro Boy (the new series) is not very popular :( ! I feel like I'm the only fan !

I like to read your Astroboy discussions! :D , it allows me to know everything :D ! What's more, Adrian_68's doujinshi are very beautiful :P !

That's all I wanted to say, and I hope you won't be angry that I write in French...

I live in Québec too and I liked the 2003 series, but I liked the 1980 series better. Did you see it? I have no friends in real life to share my love for Astro either. :( I'm so thankful for this forum! :D

I'll start by the translation:

I don't really know the 1980 series :o .... but my brother told me a little bit about it. I like the 2003 series better ! :D

I am happy that you replied to my message even if we don't speak the same language :) ! I was very scared to be rejected.

Translation below...

Mais je suis francophone moi aussi! :D J'ai répondu en anglais pour que tout le monde puisse comprendre et parce que tu m'avais semblé bien comprendre l'anglais. Je suis contente de savoir que d'autres Québécois visitent le forum. :) J'aurais été prête à te répondre en français en message privé ou par courriel, mais tu ne t'es pas enregistrée, alors je ne le pouvais pas... Je vais continuer en anglais, car je crois que tu comprends (sinon, tu me le diras, j'espère bien! ;) ).

But I am French too! :D I replied in English so everybody would understand and because it looked like you understood English well. I am happy to know that other Quebeckers are visiting this forum. :) I would have been willing to reply in French in a private message or by e-mail, but you didn't register, so I couldn't... I'll continue in English, because I believe you understand (otherwise, I hope you will tell me! ;) ).

I saw the 2003 series on TV by chance. At first, it didn't really attract me and I watched only sporadically. Then, I saw the last 6 episodes and I really liked them, especially when I saw Astro and Tenma hugging each other. I should say "when I saw again", because I had already seen them, but without knowing that those were the last episodes and without understanding the setting, so it had left me cold.

That's what brought me here. I've since rediscovered the 1980 series that I had liked so much and it's always fun to come here to remember good memories! :D I think that in general, people tend to like the Astroboy series they grew up with the best!

Oh and by the way, writing on forums helped me a lot with my written English! At first, it took me like 30 minutes to write 3 sentences, but with practice I got better, even if I'm still making mistakes. Many people here don't have English as a first language and I think everybody knows how difficult learning a foreign language can be, so don't be shy and give it a try if you have the desire to do so! :)

I don't know if you were speaking to me or to Sarah...?

I meant "real life friends" as in people I know around me, those I can meet without the Internet. I don't know where you live but something is telling me that you live far away from me! ;)

I used to have non-online friends who liked Astro too, but it was so long ago and we haven't kept in touch. I don't know if they'd still like Astro anyway.

But we sure can be friends here! :)
