All a firewall has ever done was cause me hassle...

Yeah, same for me. I've never been a fan of firewalls.

Anyone here who use smartFTP? Can somebody tell me how to setup the connecting retry time to 30 seconds and how to setup the segments to 4 times?
Sorry for my silly questions, but this whole FTP-thing still is a bit new to me :P .

If I'm having the privilege to download from Anapan's wonderful FTP-site I won't bother him with heaps of disconnection messagesImage.

I am SURE I CAN adjust it, but the thing is I have no idea how. I can type in the address of the router into ie and get a confuguration 'page', but I have no clue what any of it means. This means that I do not want to change anything until I know what it is I am changing. I don't want it to stop working all together.

I am thinking now tho that the router is causing the bottleneck but I should be able to configure other things to run thru it, if I could work out what it all means. It seems that most internet software has an option to configure it for working thru a firewall but I cant work out how to do that either.

Been at this all day and still dont know what I am doing >.<

I AM IN!!!!

:D

I am a tad baffled as to what it was exactly that I did to get it to work. I hope I saved whatever it is I did so I do not have to spend another 11 hours trying to do it again.

ok.. lets see what we have here..

I know why a firewall is usefull, but don't think it is usefull for the user ! Here is what I read here and there on the Internet:
The providers are convinced to put their users behind a NAT/firewall, so the peer-to-peer programs can't work, reducing the "pirated downloads" according to some institutions. Moreover, this can produce some problems with FTP, as you can see.
I'm not saying that's the problem with Danny, but it is to answer to the persons who were asking why a NAT/firewall could be usefull ;)

Fafner, what you said only indicates to me that a firewall is only benificial to the provider in helping control online content <_< . No real use for the average home user.

Louis'74: I use a download manager called GetRight to get things off of ftps or other tricky sources. Its very good if a little confusing at very first (sounds like it works very similarily to smartFTP though).

That's exactly what I was saying ;)
If MY provider took this policy, I would quit the day I realize it  (unless I can convice him to drop it, which is unlikely)

Heheh, then dont sign on with AOL, Compuserve, Sprint or any of those types of providers. Their EULA's give them power nothing short of entering your home and taking your first born...

Hey, glad you got into the FTP, Danny.
Mostly everything I have is already on the FTP. I'll be getting the last batch of the [merchant] 80's episodes soon which includes both parts of The Greatest Robot in the World.

I found one thing that might be giving people some problems when attempting to use Internet Explorer to browse the FTP - it may be necessary to enable Passive transfers in the internet options:

If you download video, you better have a firewall. In fact, I saw on About.com something about the States banning personal firewalls. It seems that they want easy access to your computer so they can prosecute you for piracy. But, if you are behind a firewall, they must hack their way in.

In regards to overnet, be sure to set the network download rate high enough to get the benefit from your high speed connection.
